“Amplified Soul”, the 16th studio album from Incognito, consists of 16 new recordings soaked in soul, coated in jazz with more than a twist of funk and dance. Or as Bluey puts it: “This is a labour of love, a gift to those who have supported us over the years”.

I Got Funk’ is a Funk playlist from the 70s. The selection starts with ‘The Payback’ from James Brown. It’s a hypnotic, minimalist, heavy funk piece with a slow tempo and a staggering bass, drum and guitar trio. The James Brown influence concludes with 3 solo songs from some of his sidemen (Maceo, Fred Wesley & Bobby Byrd) where the horns are omnipresent and enhance this ultra-funky groove. In a more Jazz-Funk oriented feeling we find the classic ‘Do it fluid’ from the Blackbyrds and the Black Heat, with an Afro-Funk influenced track from their first album. The beatmakers will surely appreciate ‘It’s a new day’ from the Skull Snaps for their drum break sampled over 400 times! The track ‘Jungle boogie’ from Kool & the gang relates to the Quentin Tarantino movie ‘Pulp fiction’, but the band is also playing ‘Sport’ by Lightnin’ Rod.

Choice entrees featuring Marvin Gaye and his duet darlings, Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Tammi Terrell, and Diana Ross. Gaye's efforts with Diana Ross have only two representatives, but they both sizzle. "You're a Special Part of Me" and "My Mistake" had the potential to enter the Top 10 but neither did, though both made inroads on the charts. The former is an uptempo, lavish production with a driving beat. The latter is a lovely, deceivingly fast testimonial, Gaye's and Ross' voices gel on the delightful romp. Mary Wells, Gaye's first partner, teams with him for two songs, the two-sided hit they enjoyed, "Once Upon a Time," a floating, moody ballad, and the rollicking "What's the Matter with You Baby." Kim Weston fares better, four of her waxings with Gaye made the cut. Everyone's down with "It's Take Two," but are you familiar with the yearning, silky smooth "I Want You Round," or the melodic proclamation of bliss "It's Got to Be a Miracle (This Thing Called Love)"? Twelve of the 21 tracks are Gaye and Terrell sides.

Extra Soul Perception is hardly an album that would stand out to more casual listeners, with the album’s greatest strengths being more on the subtle side of things. There’s not a solo or individual track that truly stands out as something special, but the album carries itself well through its various experimental tendencies as well as its more conventional moments. It’s not an album for everyone, and that’s probably why it’s not a true ‘classic’, but Extra Soul Perception is a wonderful journey that’s there for anyone looking to travel through the heart of what makes jazz special.

Over the years Jalapeno Records has had the pleasure of releasing music from some of the finest names in funk, soul and beyond. It’s no secret we love a good soulful vocal and last year saw us launch our ‘Soul Sisters’ compilation series which focused on exactly that. Spanning jazzed out beats, electronic nu soul and of course a healthy dose of classic sounding cuts too, we collated the best female performances of the Jalapeno catalogue in one bumper album.

No fan of classic funk (or of the "rare groove" school of dance music) will be able to look at this album without starting to drool – the period-piece cover art; the Jimmy Walker hats and bell-bottoms; and the presence of such magic names as Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, Bobby Byrd and Clyde Stubblefield (not to mention the insanely funky bassist Bootsie Collins who is better known as a charter member of Parliament/Funkadelic but is also a J.B.'s alumnus) – all of it will lead the perceptive groovehound to anticipate an hour or so of irresistibly booty-shaking funk. And that's exactly what you get: no frills, no synthesizers, basically no acknowledgement of change in the pop music world. From the greasy "Do the Doo" to the CD bonus track, "Mistakes and All," which ends the program, Bring the Funk on Down delivers almost nothing but hardcore, horn-heavy old-school funk (with a couple of brief and uninspiring excursions into ballad territory another James Brown tradition). Highlights include the slowly simmering title track and the archetypal "Born to Groove" but the album is really pretty consistent. The only downside is the absence of Maceo Parker who plays only on the final track. Highly recommended.

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1978 funk/soul classic. Having spent the 1960s redefining R&B through writing/producing most of The Temptations' hits, Rose Royce would prove to be Norman Whitfield's most enduring project of the 1970s. With 1976's multi-racial quasi-musical Car Wash acting as the band's launch, the Grammy-winning soundtrack was a playful guide to the funk/disco the band would expand on through the remainder of the disco era. Signing to Whitfield's self-titled label, Rose Royce would close out the 1970s with internationally successful hits.
