Pianist Lars Vogt presents one of the classic works of the Baroque repertoire – Johann Sebastian Bach’s (1685–1750) famous Goldberg Variations. Originally written for the harpsichord the Goldberg Variations, published in 1741, embody an Aria with 30 variations and a coda. Bach wrote the work for Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, who, as the narrative says, often played music as a cure for Count Kaiserling’s insomnia. Apparently the work was one of the successes that Bach had during his lifetime and it was also published during his lifetime.

Bach's Goldberg Variations have become quite popular over the past few decades. They have been played on the harpsichord, piano and other keyboard instruments, by string ensembles and orchestra. They have been presented as exercises and accomplished concert masterpieces. They have been interpreted as austere period works and treated as dry architectural marvels…

The Goldberg Variations, composed for harpsichord, have a potential that allows various instrumentalists to discover completely new sound and expressive values in them. They are most often played on the piano, but there are arrangements for organ, harp, guitar, orchestra, jazz trio… the list goes on and on. Each of the arrangements is met with scepticism at first, only to gain a group of enthusiasts over time. The genius of The Goldberg Variations is based on the fact that the work operates in its own universe, and each of the new interpretations or arrangements reveals something different here.

‘This recording’, says accordionist Samuele Telari, ‘is one that I felt compelled to make. Every time I play Bach’s Goldberg Variations I realise that something changes inside me, and as a consequence in my interpretation as well. The piece is a kind of mirror into which I can look and see what is inside me. Finally, after performing it many times in concert over several years, I felt ready to fix a version in a recording.’
