By the end of the 70s and beginning of the 80s, R.E.O. Speedwagon had won the hearts, minds and airwaves of continental North America. This hard won ascendance was comprehensively documented on the 8CD “Early Years 1971-1977” collection from HNE.
What would the movies be without music? Imagine Pulp Fiction without Dick Dale’s cataclysmic surf-rock guitar. Or Super Fly without Curtis Mayfield’s haunted croon. It’s impossible to do. Throughout film history, songs have added glory to struggle, majesty to landscapes, depth to heroes and villains alike. When sound and vision meet, transcendence ensues. A Night At The Movies is a brand new 3CD collection of songs which not only featured in iconic films, but elevated them to legendary status. So ladies and gentlemen, take your seats, and enjoy the show!
The 1989 release The Best of Luther Vandross captures Vandross at the peak of his powers, chronicling the '80s, when he reigned as the premier soul crooner of his time. That remains the definitive portrait of Vandross at his creative pinnacle, but 2003's The Essential Luther Vandross extends its reach much further, stopping when Vandross left Epic in 1996. So, it becomes a summary of his time at the label, and it's a thorough one; it may not be sequenced chronologically, but it hits all the big songs.
Silva Screen Records’ 100 Greatest Film Themes, Take 2 continues in the vein of its predecessor by compiling an esoteric collection of movie music that spans generations. From Citizen Kane and West Side Story to Slumdog Millionaire and Avatar, the overview can seem a bit random at times, and the majority of the tracks are recent re-recordings of the source material, resulting in a fairly generic set of film music.
Luther Vandross was one of the most successful R&B artists of the 1980s and '90s. Not only did he score a series of multi-million-selling albums containing chart-topping hit singles and perform sold-out tours of the U.S. and around the world, but he also took charge of his music creatively, writing or co-writing most of his songs and arranging and producing his records. He also performed these functions for other artists, providing them with hits as well.
