As a “wunderkind” he sat on Pietro Mascagni’s lap, he accompanied the “Dying Swan” danced by the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova, and Fritz Kreisler confessed to the young violinist that he did not know what else to teach him. “No one places Schneiderhan in the company of Kreisler, Heifetz, Huberman, Szigeti or Stern, yet he was as ‘complete’ a violonist as any of them, maybe even more so", wrote the English critic Tully Potter. Wolfgang Schneiderhan’s playing was noble, balanced and sober, but at the same time intense, heartfelt and fetching. Artistic distance and immediacy of expression were not opposites for him. He attached great importance to reliable musical scores and placed himself at the service of the music – qualities that would later become important for historical performance practice. In short, a fascinating artist to be rediscovered.

Between 1988 and 2010, Steve Reich composed three string quartets – ‘Different Trains’, ‘Triple Quartet’ and ‘WTC 9/11’. Deutsche Grammophon now presents this trilogy of works for the first time on one album, in definitive new recordings from the Mivos Quartet. Hailed by The Chicago Reader as “one of America’s most daring and ferocious new-music ensembles”, the Mivos players developed their interpretations of the three quartets – inspired by the music of speech, echoes of Bartók and the events of a day transformed by terror – in close collaboration with the composer. Reich himself supported the project from inception to completion, answering the group’s questions about fine musical details, offering advice on matters of style and endorsing the finished album. ‘Steve Reich: The String Quartets’, featuring notes by veteran radio host and music writer John Schaefer, is set for release digitally, on CD and on vinyl (2 LPs) on 3 February 2023

Due to Serkin's advanced illness, he was unable to finally approve the tapes at the time. This release of the great Beethoven pianist has now been made possible thanks to the support of Serkin’s daughter Judith Serkin, who also contributed a personal text for the booklet. The recording presents a very personal, wise and tender reading of Beethoven. In addition to numerous photos, the booklet also includes recording protocol and a letter to the recording producer.
