Gustave

Gustave Jacquet, a portrait and genre painter, was a student of Bougereau who found his artistic inspiration in the past. He debuted at the Salon in 1865 with a painting entitled La Riverie, painted very much in the style of his teacher. In the subsequent years, however, Jacquet abandoned Bougereau’s style and began painting small-scale canvases depicting sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth century scenes. Around the same period, he also turned his attention to portraiture, often dressing his subjects in sixteenth century costumes.

Gustave Clarence Rodolphe Boulanger (1824-88) was a French figure painter. He was born at Paris, studied with Delaroche and Jollivet, and in 1849 took the Prix de Rome. All his paintings show a refined taste and imagination, but are cold and academic in execution. They include a "Moorish Cafe" (1848), "Cæsar at the Rubicon" (1865), the "Promenade in the Street of Tombs, Pompeii" (1869), and The Slave Market (1888). The recipient of many medals, he became a member of the Institute in 1882.

Rudolf/Rudolph Erich Raspe (1736-1794) was a German librarian, writer and scientist. He is best known for his collection of tall tales: The Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1785), originally a satirical work with political aims. The Baron Munchausen tales were made famous when they were 'borrowed', translated into German, and embellished somewhat by G. A. Bürger in 1786 - and have been a favourite read of subsequent generations, as well as the basis of several films.

In Trois Contes are included three stories: Un cœur simple (A Simple Heart), Saint Julien l'hospitalier (The Legend of St. Julian) and Herodias.
