Paul Gustave Doré (January 6, 1832 – January 23, 1883) was a French artist, engraver, and illustrator. He worked mainly in wood engraving, of which he remains the most popular master.
Doré was born in Strasbourg and published his first illustrated story at fifteen. He became a book illustrator in Paris, and his commissions included works by Rabelais, Balzac, and Dante. In 1853 he was asked to illustrate the works of Lord Byron. This commission was followed by other work for British publishers, including a new illustrated English Bible. Gott examines Eliot’s The Waste Land (1922) in conjunction with Gustave Flaubert’s La Tentation de Saint Antoine (1874). He provides a highly original reading of both texts and argues that a stylistic affinity exists between the two works.
