Françoise Hardy is a pop and fashion icon celebrated as a French national treasure. With her signature breathy alto, she was one of the earliest and most definitive French participants in the yé-yé movement (a style of pop music that initially emerged from Italy, Switzerland, Spain, and Portugal before spreading to France in the early 1960s). She is one of only a few female vocalists who could or would write and perform her own material.

She is one of only a few female vocalists who could or would write and perform her own material. She offered a startling contrast to the boy's club of French pop in the early '60s, paving the way for literally thousands of women all over the globe. Known for romantically nostalgic songs and melancholy lyrics, Hardy's first single, "Tous Les Garçons et les Filles," sold over two million copies and made her a European star overnight. Outside music, Hardy also established herself as a fashion model, actress, astrologer, and author. Though she has recorded songs in several languages, it was her early French tunes — that ranged across pop, jazz, blues, and more — that helped to establish her as a legend. In the '70s, she reinvented herself as an artist transcending teen-friendly pop to interpret songs by everyone from Leonard Cohen to Patrick Modiano and has remained a grande dame of French popular song ever since.

Keegan’s Elegies for Emma, for voice and guitar, seeks to restore the voice of Hardy’s first wife Emma alongside the regret-filled poems Hardy wrote after her death, while String Quartet No 1 ‘Elegies for Tom’ weaves instrumental meditations on Hardy’s poem ‘Afterwards’ together with interludes setting a later poem by Philip Larkin. Recently named Young Artist of the Year at the prestigious RPS Music Awards, mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean is joined by guitarist James Girling and the Ligeti Quartet in performances that linger long in the memory.

Jack Hardy was a songwriter’s songwriter, the most influential definer of the Fast Folk era in New York City. He left an indelible imprint with his solo production, in addition to his activity as a promoter of the folk scene and discoverer of talents until his untimely passing in 2011 – aged 63, succumbing to lung cancer. A hugely important figure that wrote an impressive number of outstanding songs. Lucinda Williams, who knows whereof she speaks when it comes to great songs, expressed all her love for Hardy when she said “Jack wrote some of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.” And who can doubt Lucinda! “Southern Comfort” was recorded in Cosenza – deep South of Italy, in 1988 – a place that Jack would call “a slice of Paradise”, hence the title. Superb accompaniment by Todd Scheaffer on guitar and Brady Rymer on bass (both on backing vocals too) plus Jack himself in a state of grace, make this performance one of the absolute best of his 40 years of touring. Such is the energy, the conviction and the almost trascendental artistic gesture. One of the closest friends of Jack Hardy has labelled this performance as a compulsory listen.

Throughout her career, most of Françoise Hardy's arrangements have tended toward the lush, though in a good way. La Question is lush too, but it's one of her most sparsely produced efforts, usually finding her voice accompanied by little more than an acoustic guitar, touches of bass, and very subtle orchestration.
