In the 1980s, as historically informed performance was becoming the new standard for early music, there were several attempts by period-instrument ensembles to record all of Haydn’s symphonies. One of these Haydn series that created a stir at the time was directed by the London-based violinist-conductor Derek Solomons. Between 1980 and 1986, he recorded 49 symphonies with his hand-picked ensemble, L’Estro Armonico. Included in this edition of 18 newly mastered discs are several recordings never before issued in any medium.

This CD, recorded live, will leave you smiling with delight and amazement. These symphonies are among Haydn's greatest; written in 1788-89, they exhibit every facet of his technical skill, inspired inventiveness, and emotional range. At the height of his mature mastery, he experimented with new forms, daring modulations and key changes, and breathtaking swings of mood and character. One of his fingerprints is the alternation between serene major and somber minor, especially in his variations; but he has surprises in store everywhere, as solemnity gives way to sprightliness, elegance to rusticity, tragedy to mischievous humor.

This live recording of a group of Haydn's late masterworks lies at the intersection of several tales of trouble – that of Simon Rattle's conductorship of the venerable Berlin Philharmonic, that of the EMI label's flagging fortunes and those of the classical recording industry in general, and that of the attempts of the massive symphony orchestras rooted in the nineteenth century to remain relevant in music written by composers who for the most part had no inkling of their existence. The results are, well, troubled. Rattle tries to borrow a page from the authentic-performance book, using a small group of strings with little vibrato and striving for transparent textures that reveal Haydn's wind and horn parts.

Christopher Hogwood and the Academy of Ancient Music have released eleven volumes which complete the cycle of Haydn symphonies. They play this music with just the right blend of elegance and vigour, and their smooth, spare textures and clean lines continue to persuade me they were right to dispense with the harpsichord continuo. This is definitely the Haydn cycle to collect.

The "Esterhazy Music Collection" series with the Orfeo Orchestra conducted by Gyorgy Vashegyi on the Accent label is dedicated to presenting musical treasures of the Esterhazy family, many of which have been largely forgotten over the centuries. The recordings usually take place in the Apollo Hall of the Esterhazy Palace in Fertod-Eszterhaza, whose acoustics are among the best in the world. The present production is the third volume and offers a selection of earlier symphonies by Joseph Haydn. In addition to Symphonies Nos. 24, 42 and 43 from the years 1764 to 1771, No. 30, which already bore the epithet "Alleluja" on contemporary copies from 1765, is also heard. This is based on the use of the Gregorian Alleluia of the Easter liturgy in the main theme of the first movement. The symphony may have been composed for ecclesiastical use; a possible performance took place on Easter Sunday 1765.

As ever, the conductor-less New York orchestra give lithe, impeccably groomed performances. Tempos tend to be swift, articulation exceptionally buoyant and precise, phrasing stylish and gracious. . . . [A]ll three minuets are beautifully judged, poised and light of foot . . . and the Andantes of the two D major symphonies are nicely done, too, with an awareness of deeper currents beneath the perky charm of No. 73. . . . [T]here's a lot of pleasure to be had from these nimble and elegantly crafted performances, cleanly recorded . . .
