This is a great compilation of group harmony (a.k.a. doo wop) vocal performances, mostly from the 1950s. Some of these tracks circulate widely on holiday compilations, but others are very rare. In my collection, for example, this release is my only source for the tracks by the Shantons, the Golden Gate Quartet, the Larks, and Sir Jablonski.

A long-running and top-selling CCM vocal group, Point of Grace were originally formed in the early '90s around Denise Jones, Heather Floyd, and Terry Lang. The women knew each other while growing up in Norman, Oklahoma, but only began singing together (as the Ouachitones) when they all attended Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia. By 1991, the group had added Shelley Phillips to form Say So (later Point of Grace). The CCM quartet began touring, and a first-place finish in the group competition at the Christian Artists Seminar in Estes Park, Colorado caught the eye of the Word label, which signed the quartet, releasing a self-titled debut album in 1993.

There is something inherently objectionable when a billionaire acquires an artistic masterpiece by say, Leonardo DaVinci or Claude Monet, only to sequester it from public view. When Sony/Columbia began its ambitious Legacy reissue project, those who followed their jazz titles knew it was only a question of time before the massive Billie Holiday catalog under their ownership would see the light in its entirety. The question was how? Years before there was a host of box sets devoted to her material, but the sound on those left something to be desired. Would they remaster the material in two- or three-disc sets with additional notes? Would it be one disc at a time? Would the material be issued as budget or midline material or at full price? The last item could be ruled out based on the label's aggressive and very thorough packages of single discs by Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and others.
