How to Listen to Jazz

Sister Rosetta Tharpe - Gospel Train (Expanded Edition) (1956/2018)

WEB FLAC (Tracks) - 218 MB | Cover | MP3 CBR 320 kbps - 90 MB | 00:38:47
Soul, Blues, Gospel | Label: Verve Records

The album was released in 1956 and consists of twelve flawless tracks. The album’s first and last songs, “Jericho” and “99 ½ Won’t Do,” are traditional tunes, and everything else, with the exception of Hanighen’s “Two Little Fishes, Five Loaves of Bread,” was written by Tharpe. The woman is a powerhouse of talent. Her vocals seem to anticipate artists like Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday, and sadly, her guitar playing ability seems to always be underappreciated. She is the only woman that I’ve seen play an electric guitar back in the 40s and 50s. She probably wasn’t the only one, but she was the most famous and certainly the most talented.

With so much post bop, post modern, everything, it’s wonderfully refreshing to hear an album like this one, with piano great Alan Broadbent taking our ears back to the roots of the modern in a joyful tribute to bebop music. Ah! The trio of Broadbent with Harvie S/b and Billy Mintz/dr don’t need to prove their bonafides, as they are three of the top artists around, so you know they are digging onto this snappy material because of the simple reason of its rejuvenation. I forgot how fun it was to listen to music; this is why I switched from rock to jazz!

The album cover is another reminder of the Bosstown Sound days. It is a picture of them playing at the Esplanade's Hatch Shell in Boston during a Bosstown Sound rock concert. I never hear people talk about this but this was a big deal, at least it seems to me. I can't remember the Hatch Shell having a rock event ever before this. The Shell is where the Boston Pops would play. The Pops would do the Fourth of July concert there. It was all about the fuddy duddys. All of sudden we had about 10 rock groups playing. The place looked packed to me as I walked around and wondered where all these people came from. I think there was about 14,000 people. I seem to remember reading that in the paper the next day. In any case, they had trouble, of course, and vowed to never have rock there again. This has happened now and again up to the current day. The last time was a Green Day concert that got out of hand. Long live rock n' roll. The album was rereleased in 2007 on CD by Akarma Records but as far as I can tell now that's stopped. Some of those CD's can be bought second hand if you check the web.

Sarah Vaughan - Ballads (2002)
XLD Rip | FLAC (tracks, cue, log, scans) - 267 MB
50:52 | Jazz, Vocal | Label. Roulette

Like other entries in Blue Note's excellent Ballads series, this collection features Sarah Vaughan on a number of mellow standards. The songs originate from a number of sessions Vaughan completed for Roulette between 1960-1963, and they are uniformly lovely. The settings range from the guitar/bass backing on "All or Nothing at All" to the orchestra backing on "Dreamy." Vaughan sings the tastefully arranged "You Go to My Head" with the help of the Count Basie Orchestra and the intimately quiet "In a Sentimental Mood" with guitarist Mundell Lowe and bassist George Duvivier. She slowly caresses each syllable of "'Round Midnight," "Solitude," and "Lover Man," delivering fresh takes on these commonly sung classics. A certain warmth also permeates "In a Sentimental Mood" and "If I Had You," filling each note with an air of regret. The reflective material seems tailor-made for that late hour when one's guests have departed and the cocktail glasses have been cleared. Ballads gathers 13 exquisite recordings in one place and captures Vaughan in exceptional voice. It's also enlightening to listen to how she approaches similar material when the arrangements are so divergent. To those unfamiliar with her Roulette work, Ballads offers a fine introduction.~Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Time’s got a funny way of repeating itself these days,” sings Looms frontman Sharif Mekawy on the song “Floodlines.” Boy, does it. Everything in nature seems to be cyclical to some extent, but it takes a keen eye to fit all those puzzle pieces together.

No matter how many times you’ve heard these classic Fifties hits, you’ve never heard them like this – unless you were in the studio when they were recorded! Why? Because every one of these 31 original hits appears in jaw-dropping new or rare STEREO, most for the first time ever. Hearing the original hit versions of these all-time classics in crystal-clear stereo is like hearing them for the first time. Believe it or not, 24 of these famous hits have never appeared in stereo in their correct hit-single versions until now. And these are really huge hits, like Bill Haley’s “(We’re Gonna) Rock Around The Clock,” Gogi Grant’s “The Wayward Wind,” Paul Anka’s “Diana,” and “My Prayer” by The Platters. And those are only four of the thirteen #1 hits on this CD.
