The Hudson Affair: This is an excellent retrospective of Keith Hudson's production work between the late sixties and middle seventies. Featuring more than 50 prime reggae cuts along with first-class packaging and sleeve notes, this has to be considered the definitive Hudson collection - although to be honest, there's not much competition out there. Setting out with Ken Boothe's great OLD FASHION WAY from 1969, THE HUDSON AFFAIR takes in early reggae classics from singers like Delroy Wilson, Alton Ellis, Horace Andy, and a virtual who's-who of foundation DJs, including Dennis Alcapone, Big Youth, U Roy and I Roy. There are also numerous instrumental and dub versions (check the brilliant MELODY MAKER), and plenty examples of Hudson's own "unique" microphone technique (a somber, not-always-in-tune blues wail from the lower registers), all of which make a convincing case as to why the producer was nicknamed the Dark Prince of Reggae.

Hudson's relationship with Virgin was, to say the least, tempestuous. Because of his outspoken liberterian Rasta ideology, Virgin had in mind molding him into the the next Bob Marley, a marketing ploy that Hudson vigorously resisted. Still, Virgin thought it had a Marley-type album when Hudson delivered this set of hard riddims. Although not quite Catch a Fire, Rasta Communication is a fine effort, with Hudson upping the political ante on songs like "Felt the Strain" and "My Eyes Are Red." Ominously known as "The Dark Prince of Reggae," Keith Hudson was born into a musical family in Kingston, Jamaica in 1946. His musical education began as Hudson worked as a sort of roadie for Skatalite and Jamaican trombone king Don Drummond.

Hudson Hawk was an action-comedy vehicle for a post-Die Hard Bruce Willis, directed by Michael Lehmann. Willis plays Eddie Hawkins, a master thief who, on the day of his parole from prison, suddenly finds himself blackmailed into committing a series of elaborate heists. The complicated plot involves the Italian Mafia, an evil international conglomerate, the artwork of Leonardo da Vinci, and a machine that turns lead into gold, but it’s really just an excuse for Willis and his co-star Danny Aiello to engage in various globe-trotting escapades of comic tomfoolery. The film co-stars Andie MacDowell, James Coburn, and Richard E. Grant, and unfortunately was an enormous box-office flop; audiences seemingly couldn’t reconcile Willis’s tough guy persona with the film’s slapstick comedy action, bizarre sound effects, and surreal humor. Musically, Hudson Hawk is an enjoyable oddity. One of the conceits in the story is that the characters played by Willis and Aiello often spontaneously burst into song, as a way to synchronize the timing of their heists. The pair sing several tracks, two of which – Bing Crosby’s “Swinging on a Star” from Going My Way (which won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1944), and Paul Anka’s “Side by Side” – are featured on the film’s soundtrack.

Originally, One Way came out as Al Hudson & the Soul Partners and recorded a few interesting, but unsuccessful albums for ABC Records. They were then, and are now, a self-contained act, though the original name suggests a standup vocal group. Essentially, Midwest wonders, they never crossed over, and never got as big as predicted on the R&B circuit, despite having a devastating live act. They should have added their bassist/falsetto tenor, Kevin McCord to the title; he contributes as much as Hudson & Myers, if not more. This best of compilation ignores their Al Hudson & the Soul Partner days, and is top heavy with upbeat jams. Like an even handed boxer, One Way could deliver a lethal blow with either hand, being equally as proficient on fast tunes or ballads.
