In the autumn of 2005 Hyperion released their complete Schubert song edition, some 18 years after they started recording. The composition of these songs spanned the same number of years. Between Lebenstraum … gesang in c”, a fragment dating from 1810 when he was thirteen and Der Taubenpost written a few weeks before his death late in 1828, Schubert set over 700 texts, mostly solo songs but also part songs and for ensemble. Almost all were with piano accompaniment. Everything that has survived is included
The December 1999 sessions that produced The Water Is Wide yielded enough material for a second album. Hyperion With Higgins is the result, and its title reflects the sad fact that Billy Higgins, Lloyd's friend and soul mate and the session's drummer, passed away not long after the music was put to tape. The music's spiritual quality is heightened by the after-the-fact dedication. Quite unlike The Water Is Wide, Hyperion With Higgins is comprised entirely of Lloyd's original compositions, although the same lineup is featured: Lloyd, Higgins, John Abercrombie, Brad Mehldau, and Larry Grenadier.
'… brimful with alert character and beauty whilst the two piano pieces are delightful in their raucous melodies … briliantly done by Tanyel' (Classical Net Review). It was brave and useful and laudable of Seta Tanyel and the now-defunct label Collins Classics to have embarked, in the 1990s, in a thorough exploration of the music of Xaver Scharwenka (1850-1924), and one must be grateful to Hyperion to have reissued almost all of it. The 4-volume traversal of his solo piano music doesn't embrace I think Scharwenka's complete piano output, but it is still very substantial. Add to that the three first piano concertos (apparently Collins didn't live long enough to record the Fourth, and the first is the one disc that Hyperion did not reissue, Piano Concerto 1, obviously because they already had another one in their catalog, Rubinstein: Piano Concerto No. 4; Scharwenka: Piano Concerto No. 1) and what I think was the complete chamber music. However, I didn't always feel that the results lived up to the project's promises.
In the "long" 15th century, which lasted from 1380 to 1520 and represented the transition from the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance, there was increased attention paid in England to setting Marian devotional texts in increasingly complex counterpoint, and a corresponding growth in religious images carved in alabaster. This Hyperion release is part of an ongoing project to bring together the plainchants and choral works of early English composers, of whom John Dunstaple is the best known, and images of the alabaster sculptures that adorned English cathedrals and churches, adding substantially to the solemnity and mystery of Catholic worship.
This fantastic and massive (!!) new record is a real intense listening experience. Immense, colossal and yet deeply emotional all at once. As usual, DIRGE collaborated with several other talented guests on "Hyperion ": Milena Rousseau (MIRODA), Nicolas Dick (KILL THE THRILL) and Tara Vanflower (LYCIA). The conceptual visual art was realized and conceived by Axël Kriloff and Stefan Thanneur (CHAOS ECHOES)
Seraphical Euphony is the debut album for the Swedish metallers Hyperion and Black Lion Productions had quite a lucky hand to pick up into their roster this band. The guys recorded this album in the period between 2013 and 2015 in the Scarecrow Recordings, Forlorn Halls Studios and on various private locations in Stockholm. Hyperion is a six piece band who play very fast, technical, melodic and atmospheric kind of black metal.
