With his Kammerchor Stuttgart, Frieder Bernius has recorded Jan Dismas Zelenka’s impressive "Missa Sancti Josephi" which, although already composed in 1732, is in no way inferior to Zelenka’s famous late masses. Up to now this work was not available for performance since the autograph score - the only preserved source - was severely damaged in 1945. However, a reconstruction was possible and is now available for the first time in an edition at Carus-Verlag; the recording by Frieder Bernius was also made on the basis of this edition. As always, Bernius collaborates with high-ranking soloists, including - for the first time - the young soprano Julia Lezhneva. The recording is complemented by Zelenka's psalm compositions "De profundis" and "In exitu Israel".

Heinichen’s Mass employs especially the capabilities of the brass to achieve a festive majesty in sound. A four-voiced trumpet choir in combination with the double choir layout lend Zelenka’s Te Deum a festive character. Hans-Christoph Rademann brings choir, orchestra and soloists to their highest level of performance.

Extraordinarily well-written, prodigiously inventive, and relentlessly exciting–these aren’t terms normally used to describe 18th-century Masses, but then there is nothing “normal” about this late work by Czech composer Jan Dismas Zelenka. Simply put, if you aren’t acquainted with Zelenka (or if you’ve experienced a previous aversion to Masses), when you hear this piece-a substantial and powerful conception, from the first note of the Kyrie to the final chord of the Dona nobis pacem-you will wonder why this composer does not enjoy much greater esteem and popularity with performers, particularly alongside J.S. Bach (his contemporary) and Mozart.

Jan Dismas Zelenka, court composer of August Elector of Saxony in Dresden, is steadily regaining his deserved reputation. In thi snew recording for Pan Classics, the accomplished young British countertenor Alex Potter succeeds in displaying a wide emotional range in selected works for alto solo: he dazzles with astounding virtuosity in the motet 'Barbara, dira effera' and soars in tender arcs of tension in his performance of the 'Christe eleison' from a late unfinished mass. He is accompanied with consummate sensitivity by the Capriccio Barockorchester from Basel who also round off this recording with several of Zelenka s instrumental works.

Jan Dismas Zelenka is a significant but frequently neglected eighteenth century composer who received his musical training in Prague and was active from around 1710. He worked at the court of August Elector of Saxony in Dresden and was primarily responsible for church music at court, but also composed secular instrumental works. He was universally admired in his time and is today steadily regaining his well deserved reputation. His music displays a wide emotional spectrum ranging from contemplation to triumphant ecstasy to an equal degree in his vocal works and textless instrumental music.

In the first third of the 18th-century, Prague was a major music centre, with Italian operas and concertos, French suites, Italian and German oratorios being performed in the city, and the local churches striving to acquire the latest and most virtuosic compositions. Šimon Brixi was one of the most distinguished composers who drew inspiration from this thriving culture, while creating highly inventive music of his own. He mainly wrote liturgical pieces, yet few of them have survived. Brixi gained great acclaim for his musicae navales for the popular Saint John of Nepomuk Festivities in May on the river Vltava. Although he did not publish his scores, Brixi was a renowned composer and his music was frequently performed. Copies of his works were possessed by, among others, Jan Dismas Zelenka. Brixi mastered all the styles and techniques of his time, ranging from rigorous counterpoint to elements of the nascent Galant style. The works are arranged on the album in a one-day liturgical arch, with the morning mass followed by litanies and the canticle Magnificat from vespers, which owing to its style and high technical requirements may bring to mind Zelenka's music. Made up of superlative soloists, Hipocondria Ensemble bring back to life Šimon Brixi's overlooked works. Their recording of the Magnificat is the first made on historical instruments.

Under the artistic direction of Matthias Maute, Ensemble Caprice is renowned for its innovative interpretations of baroque music. Centered around Bach’s aria Ich habe genug, this recording of adagios presents choral and orchestral pieces, mostly well-known to the general public, all having one element in common: they are all meditations on the fundamental questions of life and death. Throughout history composers have attempted to express the seemingly endless pain of human suffering through music. All performed on baroque instruments, the examples contained on this recording are among some of the most powerful explorations of this emotional space.
