Miles Davis - Sorcerer (1962, 1967) {2006 DSD Japan Mini LP Edition, SICP 1217}

Sorcerer, the third album by the second Miles Davis Quintet, is in a sense a transitional album, a quiet, subdued affair that rarely blows hot, choosing to explore cerebral tonal colorings. Even when the tempo picks up, as it does on the title track, there's little of the dense, manic energy on Miles Smiles – this is about subtle shadings, even when the compositions are as memorable as Tony Williams' "Pee Wee" or Herbie Hancock's "Sorcerer."

Since his days with the Bud Powell Trio, drummer Art Taylor was an invaluable member of the Blue Note recording family. A.T.'s Delight is the only album made under his own name for the label and it is a remarkable one. Choosing great compositions by Coltrane, Monk, Denzil Best and Kenny Dorham, Taylor assembled a great quintet fronted by Dave Burns and Stanley Turrentine, often adding Potato's congas to the proceedings. The unique and varied arrangements and great playing pay tribute to the drummer's exceptional song selection.

Reissue the with latest 2014 DSD remastering. Comes with liner notes. Mingus Dynasty is an album by Charles Mingus, recorded and released in 1959. It is the companion album to the classic Mingus Ah Um and was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. Brilliant work by Mingus – recorded right around the same time as his legendary Mingus Ah Um album for Columbia! The group features some of Mingus' best sidemen – like Booker Ervin, Jimmy Knepper, John Handy, Roland Hanna and Don Ellis – and the tracks have that wild mix of emotion, tight composition, and freewheeling soloing that made Mingus' late 50's output so compelling. Includes "Diane", "Song With Orange", "Gunslinging Bird", and "Far Wells, Mill Valley". Plus the CD includes the bonus track "Strollin" and unedited versions of "Slop", "Song With Orange", "Gunslinging Bird", and "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" – all of which were originallly shaved down for release on the original album, now here in their proper form.

Reissue features the latest DSD remastering and HR cutting. Also features the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD players). Good feelings and plenty of soul – some very early work as a leader from Hammond hero Johnny Smith! The set's got Johnny using the organ with lots of stops out – that full, wide range of the instrument that initially knocked so many folks for a loop when it first came into jazz – then really took strong formation in the hands of a player like this! The groove's a bit like a Jimmy Smith record for Blue Note, but a lot grittier too – with some occasional elements of R&B mixed in with the more far-reaching jazz sensibilities. The group features Thornel Schwartz on guitar, who'd played famously with Jimmy Smith – plus George Tucker on bass and Leo Stevens on drums.

A traditional jazz quartet rooted in the sounds, styles and history of jazz, Sophisticated Lady brings a fresh approach to this music. With a mix of original compositions and new interpretations of classic repertoire this quartet has a sound and aesthetic that is both familiar and new. The quartet pays homage to the Great Tradition of American jazz but most of their repertoire is written by members of the quartet. Unlike the majority of contemporary jazz recordings, which are carefully and surgically perfected in postproduction, this album remains raw and fresh. These tracks are complete takes, “live to tape”, without editing.

Reissue features the latest DSD remastering and HR cutting. Also features the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD players). On Johnny "Hammond" Smith's first album as a leader, the organist simply sits himself down in front of a standard guitar-bass-drums trio (featuring guitarist Thornel Schwartz, who had previously worked with Jimmy Smith) and lets rip. The songs are a nice combination of standards, like "Secret Love," "The Masquerade Is Over" and "Pennies From Heaven," along with Smith originals that have a more blues-based, gospel-like air.

Whether they called him “Satchmo” or simply the “man with the silver trumpet”, millions of people, from Mongolia to Munich, Milano and Mozambique, recognized the cherubic countenance, gravel voice, and high, rhythmic notes that bought thousands to greet him and hear him wherever he went – the magnetism was, at times, as awesome as his music could be. Louis Armstrong was one of the greatest musicians jazz ever produced, perhaps – and few, if any, will argue against this – the greatest.

Reissue with the latest 2014 DSD remastering. Comes with liner notes. Nirvana is lovely work from Charles Lloyd – recorded at the point when he was just pushing off from Chico Hamilton's group, and before he got too noodly for his own good! Side one of the record features Lloyd with his own group – jazzing it up in a mix of flute, guitar, and percussion on a number of short tracks that have a light and breezy feel. There's a nice dose of bossa in the set, plus some of the other freer rhythmic styles that Lloyd and Hamilton experimented with together at the time – but all of the tracks have a strong rhythmic pulse, and never lose their groove for too much experimentation. Side two features two wonderful tracks with Hamilton's group at a point when Lloyd was still working with the ensemble – both long tracks with a modal pulse and a great deal of spirituality – again free, but never too much so! A nice little album – with tracks that include "Island Blues", "Carcara", "Long Time Baby", "One For Joan", and "Freedom Traveler".
