Everyone has heard of Johnny Cash these days, but back in 1954, he was pretty much an unknown. He moved to Memphis in 1954 and was studying to become an announcer on the radio. In his spare time, he played music with Luther Perkins and Marshall Grant. These two fellows were also known as the Tennessee Two. He and the Tennessee Two got their own show at a radio station in Memphis, Tennessee called The Johnny Cash Radio Show in 1954. Here is one of the only recordings left from that show and I think it’s the first episode. Enjoy this rare classic right now.

If Out Among the Stars had come out when its sessions were completed, it would've appeared sometime in 1984, arriving between 1983's flinty Johnny 99 and 1985's slippery, sentimental Rainbow. Allegedly, this album – discovered by Legacy and John Carter Cash during some archival work in 2012 – was shelved because its Billy Sherrill production was just a little bit too pop for Johnny Cash's taste, but that reasoning isn't sound, particularly with the Chips Moman-produced crossover of sugar of Rainbow taken into consideration. Moman had been riding high on the hits he produced for Willie Nelson – notably "Always on My Mind," Willie's last great crossover smash – and he applied a similar heavy-handed touch to Cash, who at that point was several years away from his last Country Top 10 hit.

A study in contrasts, and all the more American because of it, Johnny Cash holds a unique place in pop music history. His fans span generations, and fit in across the cultural spectrum, from teenaged punks to gray-haired congressmen, from Merle Haggard to Snoop Dogg, and seemingly all points in between. His music has always been instantly recognizable no matter what genre – country, rockabilly, gospel, folk – he was working in, and given the sheer volume of material he recorded, it's amazing how uniform it all is, adding up in the end to, well, Johnny Cash. This two-disc set includes Chris Cooper's Johnny Cash's America documentary DVD on the singer along with a second disc featuring the soundtrack from the film, which includes fine performances of "Big River," "Folsom Prison Blues," and "Five Feet High and Rising," among others.

Johnny Cash there are few musicians to embody a style on their own. Personalities beyond the boundaries of the genre in which history usually ranks them. The Elvis, The Miles, and of course the Johnny Cash ! Although he remains one of the gods of country music, he was also inseparable from the history of rockabilly, rock'n'roll, folk and even gospel. Cash was a voice (baritone out of the norm) but also a pen that signed masterpieces like I Walk the Line, Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire, Get Rhythm or Man In Black, The Man In Black as he will be nicknamed throughout his life. A life begun on February 26, 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas and sparse with themes as Imperial as redemption.

At San Quentin was released as a single-disc expanded edition in 2000 bearing the subtitle "The Complete Concert," so the appearance of the triple-disc Legacy Edition of the album a mere six years later brings up one simple question: if the 2000 edition was complete at a single disc, how is this set more complete? The answer is both complicated and simple. First, one disc of this three-disc set is a DVD containing the hour-long documentary about this concert shot for Granada TV in the U.K. and originally aired in 1969. Second, the 2000 CD more or less contained the entirety of Johnny Cash's portion of the concert, but this contains the entire concert, which means that it has performances from the other three acts on the tour: Carl Perkins, the Statler Brothers, and the Carter Family.
