Anne-Sophie Mutter’s mentor Herbert von Karajan called her “the greatest musical prodigy since the young Menuhin”. In this deluxe hardcover book are presented their earliest solo concerto recordings, beginning with Mozart from 1978, when the violinist who was just 14 played with “… the confidence and assurance of a seasoned professional” (Gramophone). The Beethoven (“rapt and poetic” – Gramophone) followed the next year; Bruch and Mendelssohn in 1980. All three albums immediately won universal acclaim with the young violinist praised for her assured and lyrically fresh tone while Karajan’s Berlin forces provided superlative musical support.

Lola Bobesco: an admirable and great musician whose name is nowadays not as well-known as that of other important violinists of the 20th century. This might be attributed to the fact that you had to experience her live, on stage, where she was especially convincing. Her compelling and lively playing as well as the way she efficiently dealt with the kinetic energy of music made her audience listen with rapt attention. This is an extensive release which features Lola Bobesco. It contains three albums featuring violin concertos from the Baroque to the 20th century. Some of the recordings featured here are being released for the first time.

Danish violinist-turned-conductor Nikolaj Znaider, who won the prestigious Reine Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 1997, has decided to record Mozart’s complete violin concertos, conducted from the violin with the London Symphony Orchestra. Znaider has a particularly strong relationship with that orchestra, with which he has been performing as a soloist since 2005, and as a conductor since 2011. For his Mozart project, he has of coursed reduced the orchestra’s string section to a more Mozartian, nearly chamberlike size, so that the solo violin weaves seamlessly into the delicate musical fabric, as if it were some kind of “primus inter pares”.

At the ripe old age of 19 Mozart wrote five violin concertos, and they represent his coming of age as a composer of orchestral music. From here on, it's basically one masterpiece after another. Though not difficult works, technically speaking, they partake in full measure of Mozart's uniquely sensual brand of melody. That means that successful performances must know how to spin out a singing musical line, while at the same time making the most of the rare opportunities for soloistic display.
