He was closely associated with EMI for the majority of his recording career (specifically from 1946 to 1960 and then again from 1969 to 1984). While Beethoven’s symphonies, so central to Karajan’s recorded legacy, embody music’s transition from Classicism to Romanticism, this set presents symphonies by Beethoven’s great Classical predecessors – Mozart and Haydn – and his admiring Romantic contemporary, Schubert. It also offers a rarity: the overture to Cherubini’s opera Anacréon.

Often named the supreme pianist of his era, Sviatoslav Richter (1915-1997) was a poet of the keyboard and an enigmatic, sometimes eccentric figure. These 24 CDs span three centuries of music – repertoire for solo piano and piano duo, chamber music, song and concerto – and bring Richter together with other great artists of his time. As the New York Times wrote, his pianism “combined astonishing technical mastery with bold, wide-ranging musical imagination. His control over the colorings of piano tone was incomparable.”

He is one of the few conductors for whom Herbert von Karajan was a musical mentor. They met for the first time in 1968, when Karajan was performing as a guest in the Soviet Union with the Berliner Philharmoniker. Jansons was the youngest of twelve students invited to conduct for Karajan in a masterclass. Afterwards, Karajan invited him to study with him. In 1971, Mariss Jansons was a prize-winner at the Herbert von Karajan International Conducting Competition. In the years thereafter, he often approached his mentor again for advice.
