Often named the supreme pianist of his era, Sviatoslav Richter (1915-1997) was a poet of the keyboard and an enigmatic, sometimes eccentric figure. These 24 CDs span three centuries of music – repertoire for solo piano and piano duo, chamber music, song and concerto – and bring Richter together with other great artists of his time. As the New York Times wrote, his pianism “combined astonishing technical mastery with bold, wide-ranging musical imagination. His control over the colorings of piano tone was incomparable.”

This 3CD set contains 50 tracks from the finest EMI recordings of the famous Wiener Philharmoniker, know in English as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, under some of the world’s greatest conductors including Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan, Rudolf Kempe, André Cluytens, Riccardo Muti and many others.

Renowned conductor Herbert von Karajan leads the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra through treasured pieces by Wagner. This essential release includes “Tannhauser: Overture,” “Tannhauser: Venusberg Music,” “Lohengrin: Prelude (Act I)” and “Tristan und Isolde: Prelude and Liebstod.”

The Karajan Official Remastered Edition is a series of 13 box sets containing official remasterings of the finest recordings he made for EMI between 1946 and 1984. Karajan captures all the splendour, power and charm of the Russian repertoire in this 7-CD box, recorded almost entirely with the Philharmonia. Tchaikovsky, both symphonies and ballet music, takes pride of place beside Mussorgsky, Borodin, Balakirev, Stravinsky and Prokofiev. The great Bulgarian bass Boris Christoff performs an aria from Boris Godunov and the celebrated comic actor Peter Ustinov narrates Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf.

Leonora, the main female character of Il trovatore, embodies like no other Verdian heroine absolute devotion and faithfulness, until her ultimate sacrifice to save her lover. One of the most tragic roles of the bel canto repertoire, it is very vocally demanding, requiring a wide ambitus and virtuosity. Having triumphed in Leonora on all world stages, Maria Callas bade farewell to the role in this stunning recorded version, conducted by Karajan and surrounded by a five-star vocal cast.
