I new this would be good, but I am so glad I stepped up and purchased this collection. My wife and I play through the list of CD's daily. Yes,the standards are there, but it's the players we are unfamiliar with that make this a great buy!
This CD by guitarist Kenny Burrell begins with a solid swinger, Will Davis' "Mark 1." Unfortunately, most of the remainder of the set is ballad-oriented and features Burrell's vocals on nearly half of the selections. While Burrell's voice is not bad, it cannot carry an entire project by itself. His guitar playing is fine, but there are no moments where one feels that he is really stretching himself. There are appearances from veteran pianist Gerald Wiggins and tenor saxophonist Herman Riley that add a little bit of spark to the set, but not enough to make this so-so effort all that memorable.
Active for nearly three decades, Kenny Werner has earned a reputation as one of the most inventive pianists and composers in jazz. With Lawn Chair Society, he joins the illustrious roster of Blue Note Records and unveils the most thrilling and unorthodox statement of his career thus far. He is joined by some of the best players in the world- Dave Douglas, in a rare sideman appearance, on trumpet and cornet; Chris Potter on tenor sax and bass clarinet; Scott Colley on bass; and Brian Blade on drums. With the aide of producer Lenny Pickett, Werner and the band conjure a subtle blend of acoustic and electronic elements. The results are melodically rich, sonically futuristic, offhandedly virtuosic, and politically resonant.
'Round About Midnight at the Cafe Bohemia is a live album by American jazz trumpeter Kenny Dorham featuring performances recorded in 1956 at the Café Bohemia and released on the Blue Note label. The album was originally released in 1956 in two volumes with a third volume released later on the Japanese Blue Note label. A Complete edition was released as a double CD set in 2002.
Kenny Burrell is a jazz guitar icon and probably the better known of the three members of the group but don't let that bother you because all three are on fire through out this live recording from start to finish. I once had this rare recording on cassette but was glad to find it here on cd. Thanks Amazon. Bobby Broom along with Rodney Jones are some of the best of the newer breed of jazz guitarist and are both masters of the jazz guitar.
