Ben Harper's CD Box Collection features his first three albums – Welcome to the Cruel World, Fight for Your Mind, and The Will to Live – in a cloth-bound box that also includes a 32-page booklet with lyrics and liner notes. The collection provides a welcome overview of Harper's growth toward becoming an uncompromisingly political yet very musical artist. Ben Harper, A little bit Jimi and a little bit Marley and a whole lot of soul. I give it to you straight, I haven't purchased this set but I have purchased each album individually when they were released. This set is great for those new to Ben especially after the Burn to Shine release brought him to the masses. You can get your fill for a lower price with this set. Ben mixes blues with funk, rock, hip-hop, R&B, and classical with the greatest of ease. He is truely a genius, because never before has a man brought so many genres of music together into what can only be described as a symphony. Speaking of symphonies just listen to Roses from My Friends and you can feel the energy, passion and emotion which is truely immense. He is one of the few true artists of our time, so if you don't have this pick it up. Ballads to Blues Jams - Ben does it all.
Summer 1988 and as Acid House raged across the UK pockets of resistance began springing up delicated to a very different beat. Inspired by Hip-Hop, Jazz and a wealth of Soul and Funk recordings stretching back to the 60's America, young musicians breathed life into old sounds, recorded new ones and set about spreading their message worldwide. Soul Jazz Sessions celebrates those bands, producers, and DJ's who took the next step into the studio and produced some dancefloor magic in the process.
Always Tomorrow is the culmination of the last ten years of Best Coast front person Bethany Cosentino's life, seeing her stand back from the past decade of the band's existence and taking stock in where she's been and who she has become. It's an album full of intense personal discovery amidst a whirlwind backdrop of global tours, heartbreak, newfound sobriety, dark thoughts, immense joy, giving a f, not giving too many fs, substances, boredom, public personas, and gratitude.
!!! could be lumped in with the other new wave dance-punk revivalists like the Rapture or Radio 4. That would be easy enough, as they all share an allegiance to the punky funk sounds of the '80s as pioneered by groups like Gang of Four, the Pop Group, Talking Heads, and others. Rather than merely lumping them in, maybe one could say they are leading the pack. Louden Up Now is easily the best record to come out of the movement; its ten tracks are filled with fervor, hooks, passion, and power. And unlike many of their peers, !!! have politics. Angry, righteous politics. Antiwar, anti-Giuliani, anti-Bush and Blair, and proud of it. It is like a blast of fresh retro air to have a band not just updating the sound but carrying over similar ideals as well…
The veteran vocalist wraps his suave, bottomless pipes around a well-chosen cross-section of covers, from Duke Henderson's jump blues "Get Your Kicks" and Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "I Love to Love You" to tougher straightforward blues originally cut by Freddy King, Guitar Slim, Jimmy Rogers, and Little Walter. A cadre of local session aces provides fine support, especially guitarist Steve Freund (who receives a couple of instrumental showcases).
