Avocet is the twelfth album by Scottish folk musician Bert Jansch, released in 1979 in UK. Six beautiful and beguiling instrumentals: the 18-minute Avocet, and five other shorter pieces each named after a different bird. This is one of the finest acoustic guitarists of all time really at the top of his game. The pieces ebb and flow beautifully with various folky and jazzy themes disappearing and reappearing throughout. The mind boggles as to how the three musicians managed to remember the pieces, let alone play them so effortlessly. This is no cheesy "easy listening" music, however, and yet none of it is anything short of magical. It's the kind of music that you might imagine Nick Drake may have gone onto make in his later years, had he lived longer.

Much of the album conists of the simple trio of Jansch's guitar with Danny Thompson's superb double bass playing and Martin Jenkins on fiddle, punctuated by the odd bit of piano and flute.

The sound quality on this re-mastered cd is warm and inviting, too, without any of the over-produced, ultra-clean, digital harshness that blights more modern music of this ilk.

The album was first released by Ex Libris in Denmark in late 1978 with alternate album cover and one alternate track title, although no difference in recorded content. The title song "Avocet" was inspired by the traditional song "The Cuckoo". All songs on the album are named after a sea bird or wading bird. The 1979 album, Avocet, was one of Jansch's most ambitious projects and remains one of his own favourites from his work.

Author:Peter Chrisp | Reading level:Ages 9-12 | Publisher:DK CHILDREN | 64 Pages | 2006-08-21 | ISBN-0756614104 | PDF | 20.04 MB

A completely unique approach to illustrated reference, DK's new Experience series uses panoramic storyboard sequences to help readers dive into the printed page and learn in a whole new way as the action unfolds.Grade 4-8–Chrisp guides readers through a graphic path of storyboard text superimposed on full-color illustrations to show the steps involved in building and the history behind the Great Pyramid of Giza. A discussion of the settlement of the Nile, a catalog of tools used in the construction, a description of the steps taken when a pharaoh died, mummification, the rediscovery of the tombs and their secrets, illustrations of the treasures found within them, and a catalog of the pyramids of the world make this a comprehensive study of the subject. Definitions of new terms are found along the bottom of each page and are highlighted in the text. David Macaulay's Pyramid (Houghton, 1975) describes in great detail the building process for an imaginary structure and has black-and-white illustrations. Anne Millard's Pyramids (Kingfisher, 1996) covers similar material but focuses more on those that have been built around the world. With its beautiful illustrations, three-dimensional diagrams, and information gleaned from the use of cutting-edge technology (CT scans), this book is an enticing, up-to-date study of Egyptology and is sure to appeal to students. It's the next best thing to being there.–Ann Joslin, Fort LeBoef School District, Waterford, PA.

The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer has been in service with the US. Navy since 1991, with construction divided between Northrop Grumman Ship Systems (formerly Litton Ingalls Shipbuilding) in Pascagoula, Miss., and General Dynamics Bath Iron Works in Maine. The first 21 ships in the class -DDG 51 through DDG 71 - are categorized as Flight I, the next seven - DDG 72 through DDG 78 - as Flight II, and those from DDG 79 on as Flight IIA. The USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) was to have concluded a build of 62 Arleigh Burke destroyers. However, following cancellation of the DDG 1000 program after the completion of only two vessels, the Navy plans to continue Arleigh Burke construction at least through USS Chandler (DDG 116). Flight IIA improvements over previous flights include hangars for two SH-60B/F LAMPS III (Light Airborne Multipurpose System) Seahawk helicopters, new combat systems software, an enlarged flight deck, the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile, the Kingfisher mine detection sonar, a Kollmorgen optronic sight, and an upgraded Aegis 7.1R combat system.
