Polish band Love De Vice was formed in 2007, initially sporting the moniker Playfinger. The core of the initial band, friends who had played together since 1993, consisted of Andrzej Archanowicz (guitars, vocals), Tomasz Kudelski (drums) and Robert Pelka (bass, vocals). For this new venture they were joined by Robert Wieczorek (guitars) and Krzysztof Slaby (keyboards). When they started recording material in 2008 it soon became clear that a vocalist was needed, which is when Pawel Granecki (vocals) joined, and soon after the band left their initial moniker Playfinger behind and decided to continue as Love De Vice.
On this CD, Isao Nakamura presents a selection of works for solo percussion which – despite some very demanding technical passages – do not focus primarily on technical brilliance but on clear, focused artistic ideas, as well as, in some cases, extra-musical concepts. The main focus here is on drums. As the only instruments tuned to a specific pitch, in this CD the timpani features in two movements of Elliott Carter's "Eight Pieces for Four Timpani" and in Peter Eötvös's "Thunder".
Samulnori is a traditional Korean folk percussion ensemble who utilizes for percussion instruments: kkaengguari, ching, changgo, and buk. Renowned changgo player Kim Duk Soo with Samulnori has put together a stunning collection of world talents who fuse traditional Korean forms with other genres that span the globe – most notably jazz and funk. The results are impressive. All of the pieces on this release maintain some facets of traditional Korean music that are unique to that culture, be it the pansori singing style on "Rabbit Stori" or the shanawi improvisational technique on "Shinawi".
Vince Guaraldi was a well-respected jazz pianist whose greatest success came from avenues usually closed to contemporary jazz artists: he enjoyed a hit single at a time when jazz had largely been exiled from the pop charts, and he scored a series of very successful animated television specials (namely the Charlie Brown seasonal specials scores and soundtracks for which his name has become synonymous), a medium where cookie-cutter pop music was traditionally the order of the day.
