The first edition of this discography, each copy of which had its own room, left on Mercury (PolyGram) sale in the luxury, deluxe version in 1997, and since then, discography, fully or partially reprinted many times. But the new runs all comers is not enough, so now it can be purchased only on occasion. And all because of Serge Lama, no doubt, is another jewel in the crown of French pop music of the past half century.
Noëlle Spieth (Solstice, record 1990-2003): the inescapable reference, with recordings that have matured over 13 years, thanks to a courageous independent label. Under the agile fingers of Noëlle Spieth, an incessant kaleidoscope of multicolored images unfolds, as the artist approaches Couperin as a painter. Never the enigmatic titles of each piece will have borne their names as well, real sketches on the spot, affectionate or ironic, without ever malice. The key word of Noëlle Spieth is movement and contrast. Alternately capable of brushing teeming storms, of approaching movements in the luthed style with emotion and modesty, the harpsichordist moves and surprises each note.
There is a story about Arnold Schoenberg that bears retelling now. He was in the midst of teaching a class at UCLA when a colleague burst in excitedly proclaiming "Arnold! I am just hearing Verklärte Nacht mit HORNS!" Amid much startled posturing the two rushed out to destinations unknown, leaving the class unacknowledged. But all the various arrangements of Schoenberg’s work (I’ve never heard it with horns, but the string orchestra version with timpani is quite a good one) don’t begin to compare with the numerous outrages wreaked upon this helpless Vivaldi composition.
With this transcription of the Goldberg Variations for string trio Dmitry Sitkovetsky pays homage to the genius of Bach over and above the original works for violin. The parts for violin, viola and cello are not divided in the context of a Baroque string ensemble supported by a basso continuo. The three equal partners function here like the different registers of a single instrument.
Bach dedicated the Aria mit verschiedenen Veränderungen to "music-lovers for the pleasure of their souls". May the transcription presented here be received in this spirit.
In 1973, after he stopped his acting career, Jacques Brel decides to travel around the world. On his boat, the Askoy II - bought in 1974, he sails the tropical seas. But he knows his fate his scealed, he has lung cancer. In 1976, his doctors tell him that he cannot be cured. He then move to the Marquesas where he writes the songs composing this album. The album is released on November 17th of 1977, one million copies have been pre-ordered.
This testament album includes some of his best songs : Jaurès, an homage to the socialist politician murdered just before World War I; Knokke-Le Zoute Tango where he openly sings about sex and prostitution in Amsterdam - his descriptions of these women had never been that precise before; Les F… a song defending french speaking culture in Belgium and mocking Flemish speaking people (he is Flemish himself) on a slightly disco music which differenciates it from the other tracks of this album.
Five of the songs here are from the musical Vilebrequin : Voir un ami pleurer, Vieillir, Les remparts de Varsovie, Le bon dieu and Knokke-Le-Zoute Tango. These great songs alone make this album a must hear. Voir un ami pleurer and Vieillir are very melancholic which makes sense considering Brel knew he was doomed when he wrote it. Les remparts de Varsovie is more upbeat and cheerful though quite machist, it has to be told that Brel had never hidden he favoured man frienship over women's love.
The original album ended on Les Marquises, a hymn to his final home where Brel lived a simple and harmonious life awaiting his death. He died on October 9th of 1978, he had left the Marquesas two days before. He has been buried in the Marquesas in the same cemetery than French painter Paul Gauguin.
This 2004 remastered edition includes 5 bonus tracks of what might have been Brel's new album had he lived a little longer…
