In the wake of punk, musicians in the UK found themselves suddenly liberated artistically and free to think in new terms commercially. The outcome was the independent label boom, and beyond that a certain Do It Yourself aesthetic. Overnight, the possibility arose of recording your own music and releasing your own record, or, if you weren’t musical yourself, setting up your own label to release records by people who were.

Famous for its revolutionary aspects in musical, political, sexual identity and consumerist ideas, punk rock also has its lesser-known gangster ethos as well, explained here by players in the various punk gangs.

Il Meistersaal, eretto sulla Köthener Straße a Berlino, nasce come sede della Società Edilizia della città. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, la struttura subisce seri danni a causa dei bombardamenti, tanto da rimanere in disuso fino al 1964, quando viene trasformato in una sala di registrazione, battezzata Hansa TonStudio, chiamata anche “Hansa By The Wall Studios” per via della vicinanza al Muro. Dalle finestre degli Hansa Studios si vedono il filo spinato e le torrette con le guardie armate. È un clima unico, desolante, spaventoso. Intorno, solo macerie, eppure qui si respira linfa vitale, un’energia insolita, capace, per quindici anni, di rendere Berlino il fulcro di un movimento che ingloba diversi generi: dal krautrock al punk, dall’elettronica all’industrial, dal post-punk al rock, dal gothic all’avanguardia, tutte forme musicali che hanno dominato le classifiche, venduto milioni di copie, conquistato generazioni di ascoltatori, e soprattutto dato speranza..
