Sombras is a musical exploration of the power that heritage has to mold one’s identity and artistry in the present. Sombras was born of an idea, and one that has burned in Henderson’s mind her entire life: how does an individual’s cultural inheritance shape who they are? As one whose roots span Panama, Montserrat, and the Caribbean, yet who was raised in North America, Henderson has embarked on a journey of discovery to answer this question that is so poignant within contemporary society’s kaleidoscopic culture. Over the course of Sombras, Henderson unravels her own history through original compositions, fashioning stories reflecting her African Diasporic background.

By the end of 2018 Lauren Henderson will have not one, but two, releases. The first of these is Ármame (the title translates as “Arm Me” (as from a broken heart), and the subtitle “Songs of Love and Loss”) and it is a recording that showcases the African as well as the Hispanic side of her fascinating heritage. This has also made for a most fascinating journey where Miss Henderson has traversed a breathtaking musical topography, an expedition she charted for herself from a very young age, which, in turn, resulted in a debut recording in 2011 that bore just her name. In seven years – a very short time for a vocalist so young to show such outstanding maturity – Miss Henderson’s voice has developed into a smoky, yet lyrical one with a range that enables her to move effortlessly from a high soprano to a blossoming contralto. With this taking place at such a remarkably young age, there is every surety that a greater fullness is yet to follow.

What's Trending is Leo Sidran’s eighth solo record. In many ways it picks up where his celebrated 2021 release The Art Of Conversation left off. If The Art was a “hymn to empathy” (El Pais, Spain) and “a treasure chest of intimate and introspective portraits of family life during the pandemic” (West Coast Soul, Germany), this latest release is a hip, deeply personal exploration of how music can make life more livable in difficult times.
