By the time Les McCann released "Compared to What" – the classic vocal track from the live Swiss Movement with Eddie Harris – the pianist was already a dozen albums into his career. Before that, he cut hip little piano trio records live and in studios with killer rhythm sections using a unique meld of blues, gospel, hard bop, and soul in an approach that made him one of the more iconic live jazz performers during the '60s and '70s. The appearance of this multi-disc set from Resonance, co-produced by Zev Feldman and George Klabin, highlights that early period. Never a Dull Moment! hosts 21 previously unreleased instrumental selections. The first 13 were recorded during performances at Seattle's The Penthouse in early 1966. The final eight were drawn from a July 1967 gig at New York's Village Vanguard. McCann's rhythm sections – in Seattle bassist Stanley Gilbert and either Paul Humphrey or Tony Bazley on drums; in New York, bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Victor Gaskin – were swinging and attentive.

In 1962, when this album was made and when he turned 26, Lou Rawls' rich baritone was unknown, except to a few gospel music fans and Hollywood hipsters who caught his act at local night clubs like P.J.'s, The Troubador, Shelly Manne's Manne-Hole or Brother's on Santa Monica and Vine. A years earlier, Capitol A&R man Nick Venet had heard Rawls at Pandora's Box Coffee Shop, who was playing there for $10 a night plus pizza in late 1959, and signed him to the label. One stillborn single emerged before Lou had the brainstorm to do an album of blues and jazz standards, backed by then up-and comer Les McCann and his trio, who were performing nearby at The Bit on Sunset Boulevard. Before his Grammy winning album Love Is a Hurtin' Thing, Stormy Monday was the first of more than 20 other albums Rawls would record on that label in only a decade.

This album, this one right here, exposes a fugitive. It flips the lid off Les McCann the piano player to reveal Les McCann the singer. The hidden man behind the man. the McCann behind the McCann. But do not think that McCann's vocal merit lies in the not-so-novel fact that he's also a fine jazz pianist. No. This singer stands on his own two feet. The fact is that he could (if absolutely necessary) sing with his hands tied behind him. This album should demonstrate the fact that true talent (feeling, beauty, swing, soul, whatever you like to call it this season) lies in the creator himself — and the release of that talent is not always limited to one vehicle of expression. In other words: never mind how you say it. just get it said. Les McCann gets it said. And he sings so much the way he plays piano that sometimes it's difficult to tell the two apart. –Vicki Arnold

One of Les McCann's greatest albums, Much Les encapsulates much of what McCann did best in his early years, while adding a few novel embellishments - like a string section and Latin percussionists - that enhance his core sound. The results are winning, likable, and consistently engaging, making for an underrated classic. McCann is joined on every cut by his trio of the time, bassist Leroy Vinnegar (who contributes "Doin' That Thing") and drummer Donald Dean, who offers solid, laid-back support. However, it's actually the string section that provides the dominant flavor of McCann's accompaniment; of the six tracks, they appear on all three slow songs, plus - in an offbeat touch - the laid-back soul-jazz of "Doin' That Thing," giving it an almost movie soundtrack feel…

Les McCann reached the peak of his career at the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival, recording "Compared to What" and "Cold Duck Time" for Atlantic (Swiss Movement) with Eddie Harris and Benny Bailey. Although he has done some worthwhile work since then, much of it has been anticlimactic.

For many, Les McCann Sings, revealed the pianist as a vocalist with something to say – which does less than justice to McCann’s work here, both vocally and pianistically. Singing with great individuality and warmth, his style combines the direct, emotional, and very communicative with an amazingly florid approach in all kind of moods, but mostly on ballads, as is the case on the lovely It’s Way Past Suppertime.
