This is a great collection of The 5th Dimension on 3 CDs. It would have easily fit on 2 CDs but I guess it was a marketing scheme to make people think they were getting more for their money. Nonetheless, it is still a great collection and features some tracks you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else. The fans of this group will not want to miss this one.

Formed in the early '60s, Los Angeles R&B quintet the 5th Dimension first appeared as the Hi-Fi's before changing their name in 1966 to better reflect the changing landscape of popular music. Their interpretations of some of the era's popular hits as well as songs by more obscure writers were radio mainstays in the late '60s and early '70s. This collection offers up most of their highest-charting and best-known singles like "Up, Up and Away," "Stoned Soul Picnic," and their chart-topping version of "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" from the musical Hair. Working in multiple styles, these performances show just how versatile and dynamic the 5th Dimension were.

Captured in the act here are Lamonte McLemore, Ron Townson, Billy Davis, Jr., Marilyn McCoo, and Florence LaRue during an early-'70s stint on the Vegas Strip, in the main room of Caesar's Palace. The performance offers an adequate sampling of the 5D's classics and concurrent pop songs that attendees would likely be familiar with.

The subtitle on this anthology is correct: this is truly the definitive collection of the 5th Dimension's music, including all the hits and most of the album cuts that anyone could want. The 20-bit digital mastering provides a crisp, bright audio experience, and the joyous harmonies bring back the positive side of the late-'60s/early-'70s era in which the songs were recorded. The megahits are all here.

The 5th Dimension is an American popular music vocal group, whose repertoire includes pop, R&B, soul, jazz, light opera, and Broadway: this melange was called "Champagne Soul".Formed as the Versatiles in late 1965, the group changed its name to the hipper "the 5th Dimension" by 1966. They became well known during the late 1960s and early 1970s for their popular hit songs "Up, Up and Away", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Medley: Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures)", "Wedding Bell Blues", "One Less Bell to Answer", "Never My Love", and "(Last Night) I Didn't Get to Sleep at All" as well as The Magic Garden album.

Between 1967 and 1973, the 5th Dimension enjoyed 29 U.S. hit singles on the Soul City and Bell labels. This compilation selects all of their Top 40 hits (bar two live tracks) and tops up the running order with five lesser hits. Top-notch material by Jimmy Webb, Laura Nyro, Neil Sedaka and Bacharach & David is rendered as exquisite harmony pop by the vocal group and their producer Bones Howe. Although "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In" (from the musical "Hair") and Nyro's "Wedding Bell Blues" were the chart-toppers, Webb's "Up, Up And Away" is the archetypal 5th Dimension sound. That the songs still sound remarkably fresh is due to the avoidance of formulaic writing, with no one writer or team being allowed to dominate. From the first hit, tellingly a cover of the Mamas & The Papas' "Go Where You Wanna Go," via material by Tony Macaulay, Sloan & Barri, and Ashford & Simpson, the quality never diminishes.

A 2CD set from organ supremo Brian Auger that includes the 1969 album Streetnoise, produced by Giorgio Gomelsky and featuring Julie Driscoll and Trinity, plus sixties compilation The Mod Years.
The final collaboration between singer Julie Driscoll (by that time dubbed as "The Face" by the British music weeklies) and Brian Auger's Trinity was 1969's Streetnoise - it was an association that had begun in 1966 with Steampacket, a band that also featured Rod Stewart and Long John Baldry. As a parting of the ways, however, it was Trinity's finest moment. A double album featuring 16 tracks, more than half with vocals by Driscoll, the rest absolutely burning instrumentals by Trinity…
