Arnold Schoenberg founded the Society for Private Musical Performances in 1918 to perform contemporary music from ‘Mahler to the present’. Mahler had been an early supporter of Schoenberg’s music, and Schoenberg repaid the favour by arranging Mahler’s orchestral works for chamber ensemble and including them at the society’s concerts. The colourful Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen are given a feel of great intimacy in this form, while the lighter scoring of Das Lied von der Erde has the advantage of clarifying instrumental textures, its magical effects capturing ‘the finite nature of earthly things’.

It comprises several volumes of varying size, dedicated to individual composers or major historical periods. The recordings in this sixth volume have all been taken from the SWR s Baden-Baden archive.

The Decca / Deutsche Grammophon catalogue of Mahler recordings is unsurpassable. Our major contribution to the celebrations this year will be the first-ever Mahler Complete Edition, a combined effort of Decca and Deutsche Grammophon recordings as an 18-CD supe-rbudget box, with the ten symphonies, Das Lied von der Erde, Das klagende Lied, the song cycles, the Knaben Wunderhorn songs and early works - in benchmark recordings by a great assembly of Mahler conductors, singers and orchestras. Each Symphony gets a different conductor, and the list is awesome: Abbado (no. 6), Bernstein (no. 5), Boulez (no. 4), Chailly (no. 10), Giulini (Das Lied), Haitink (no. 3), Karajan (no. 9), Kubelik (no. 1), Mehta (no. 2), Sinopoli (no. 7), Solti (no. 8).

The blend between the voices is finely controlled, the tone mellow and the tuning spectacularly accurate, giving rise to an organ-like sonority that is genuinely thrilling,” wrote Gramophone magazine, praising the Hilliard Ensemble’s four singers, who excelled in an extraordinary variety of music over a 40-year career. This seven-CD collection extends from the Middle Ages to the Baroque, offering music by composers from England, France, Flanders and Germany.

In 1918 Arnold Schoenberg founded the Verein für musikalische Privatauff hrungen (Society for Private Musical Performances) in Vienna. At the age of forty-four, Schoenberg was widely considered one of the most important and influential composers of his time. After his experiences in the ultra-conservative Viennese music life, culminating in the horrors of the infamous Scandal-concert of March 31, 1913, Schoenberg must have felt that the time had come to introduce a different way of presenting new music to an interested audience. With Schoenberg as president and a board of nineteen friends and students, an innovative format was developed: weekly concerts that would be open only to members of the Verein, with critics not allowed and audible approval or disapproval not permitted. The programs would remain secret until the evening of the concert. On this new recording we can hear Schoenberg’s arrangement of Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and conductor Henk Guittart’s own arrangement of Das Lied von der Erde. This is Volume 5 of Etcetera’s Verein für musikalische Privatauff hrungen. Ludwig Mittelhammer puts in a stunning performance in Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen.

The voices of Elisabeth, Ello and Cathy. What music produces is a sound. In our 20th century technological imagination, a full-scale orchestra is like a factory of thought in which the conductor incites the performer with broad gestures to produce sounds in the right way and at the right moment, in accordance with indications in the score, which serve as a more or less comprehensible guideline. This 'Metropolis - orchestra' is nonetheless lacking in one essential component: the human being and his voice. Routine is in fact incompatible with art. The primary consequence of this attitude is to consider the human voice as a fundamental value in music, and to consider instruments its traveling companions, technical means to achieve the desired meaning.

No figure in 20th century American classical music had as prominent or controversial a career – or did more to sell classical music to the general public as something genuinely exciting, and worth getting into a sweat over – than Leonard Bernstein. For more than 30 years, from his assumption of the post of Music Director of the New York Philharmonic in 1958 until the final concerts that he conducted in obviously failing health near the end of his life in 1990, he was the most prominent and widely recognized American-born conductor in the world, and the dominant personality in American classical music as both a conductor and, to a lesser degree, a composer. A flamboyant public figure, he burst three different times on the musical world – twice in classical with a rush of success on Broadway in between – in a blaze of glory, in the space of 15 years; and over a career lasting from the early '40s until the beginning of the '90s, he never lost an opportunity to advance his reputation as well as the cause of music.

Music history is full of “goosebump moments” – those instances when sounds get up right close to us, penetrating our most secret enclaves and striking a chord with something inside. Sometimes it’s a big, opulent orchestral sound or the energy of a pop concert with thousands of people. But most often, it’s actually the moments of extreme reduction, almost to an essence of the sound, that touch body and soul in such a way that leaves us still thinking about them weeks or months later. When musicians go into this sort of reduction, making themselves vulnerable in the most extreme concentration of artistic resources, the aura of the extraordinary shines through. One such moment, for example, comes in Bach’s famous St. Matthew Passion, shortly before Jesus cries out with the last of his strength: “My God, why have you forsaken me?!” And then an alto voice rises, “Ach, Golgatha”, revealing something like the core message of this Bach work and the theme: “this reaches my soul!”
