Jack Crabb is 121 years old as the film begins. A collector of oral histories asks him about his past. He recounts being captured and raised by indians

A l'âge de cent onze ans, Jack Crabb entreprend de dicter ses Mémoires sur un magnétophone depuis son hospice et c'est tout un pan de l'histoire de l'Ouest qui se révèle… Retour en 1852 : la rencontre pacifique entre un convoi de migrants et un groupe de Cheyennes tourne au carnage. Le jeune Jack, un des seuls survivants, se voit emmené au camp des Indiens et élevé au sein de la tribu. Mais contre toute attente, il trouve chez les sauvages un idéal de vie qui lui sera à jamais refusé lorsqu'il retournera chez les Blancs…
