Film noir persists long past its "golden era" of the 1940s and '50s because the forces that created it — the sense of futility generated by capitalism's lopsided benefits package — continue to exist. But noir has moved from the dark decay of wet city streets to the bleak openness of the West. The American frontier is no longer a rich, vital land waiting for wagon trainloads of pioneers or plucky individuals to conquer it; now it's a vast, dark, lonely prairie, more hopeless than hostile. Recent "neo-noirs" like «True Romance» have leavened this hopelessness with appropriate dollops of black humor, but the real standout in this style is John Dahl's dusty western tale, Red Rock West…

Three years after the debut LP "Out Of Your Ego" (2014, Seahorse Recordings) the 4-piece band from Catania (ITA) raise the sonic bar delivering a more complex and layered mixture of shoegazey reverberations, massive walls of sound, psychedelic soundscapes and crystal clear dreamy melodies. The album features 8 tracks where the influence of giants Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, The Jesus And Mary Chain, The Brian Jonestowne Massacre, Spiritualized, and more recently Ringo Deathstarr, A Place To Bury Strangers, Cheathas, Minor Victories, Flyying Colours, is reworked with a signature cosmic/space-y dark vibe, combined with lyrics invoking a dreamlike sense of melancholy and emotional fragility.

Slovenska afrobeat zasedba Nesesari Kakalulu z Obale izjemne veščine dokazuje že s tem, da kljub številčnosti deluje neverjetno usklajeno. Če nas ne očara že skladnost devetih krovnih članov, se zasedbi na odru in plošči pridruži še osem vokalistov. Čeprav so vsi vrhunski glasbeniki, nihče ne pretirava s soliranjem, delujejo povsem harmonično in enakovredno. Prvenec nazorno odraža energičnost in tehnično dovršenost živih nastopov, a žal pri tem tudi ostane, saj deluje bolj kot zbirka izbranih koncertnih posnetkov. Plošča je sicer prežeta z žmohtom, soulom in groovom, toda manjka ji svežine in prave izvirnosti: bolj kot avtorsko delo namreč deluje kot poklon Feli Kutiju, očaku afrobeata in glavnemu navdihu zasedbe.

James Gilchrist’s theme for this recital, Solitude, is reflected in varied and contrasting ways by the four works. In his booklet note, he describes solitude as ‘A state of being that we need, that perhaps we overlook too easily, that is harder to achieve and harder to endure and understand than we expect’. Henry Purcell’s O! Solitude, my sweetest choice (in the arrangement by Benjamin Britten) focuses on twin themes of solitude: the peace found in the meditative state and the pain felt by being separated from loved ones.
