Madonna's run at the top of the charts lasted so long, longer than almost any other star, it's almost impossible to squeeze all the hits onto one collection. And so it is that Celebration, a double-disc, 36-track set that also has a companion single-disc condensation, misses a few songs, hits as gorgeous as "Rain" and as goofily camp as "Hanky Panky," but truth be told, they're not greatly missed on this parade of pop genius that's hampered only slightly by its non-chronological order. Out of order, it does emphasize Madonna's consistency, and the bigger problem with the collection is that it mixes up album mixes, single edits, Q-Sound mixes pulled from The Immaculate Collection, and a couple of stray odd edits and mixes. This is a mess, but not quite enough to dilute what is one of the greatest bodies of work in modern pop – even in this mixed-up confusion, these singles are a joy to hear.

True Blue is the album where Madonna truly became Madonna the Superstar – the endlessly ambitious, fearlessly provocative entertainer who knew how to outrage, spark debates, get good reviews – and make good music while she's at it. To complain that True Blue is calculated is to not get Madonna – that's a large part of what she does, and she is exceptional at it, but she also makes fine music. What's brilliant about True Blue is that she does both here, using the music to hook in critics just as she's baiting a mass audience with such masterstrokes as "Papa Don't Preach," where she defiantly states she's keeping her baby.

Music is the eighth studio album by American singer Madonna, released on September 18, 2000 by Maverick and Warner Bros. Records. Following the success of her previous album Ray of Light (1998), she intended to embark on a tour. However, her record company encouraged her to return to the studio and record new music before going on the road. Her collaboration with producers Mirwais Ahmadzaï and William Orbit resulted in a more experimental direction for the album. Music has an overall dance-pop and electronica vibe, with influences from rock, country and folk. The album was mostly recorded at Sarm West and East Studios in London, England. Elaborating a country theme for the album, Madonna reinvented her image as a cowgirl. Music was generally acclaimed by most critics and earned five Grammy Award nominations, ultimately winning one for Best Recording Package given to art director Kevin Reagan. In 2003, Rolling Stone ranked it number 452 on their list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

In April 1985, Madonna began her first concert tour. ‘The Virgin Tour’, with the Beastie Boys as her opening act, was initially planned for an international audience, but ultimately it was restricted to the United States and Canada. After an official announcement on March 15, 1985, Madonna and her team began production plans. She wanted it to be a reflection of her own self and she collaborated with designer Maripol for the costumes. She progressed from playing CBGBs and the Mudd Club to playing large sporting arenas at this juncture in her career. The tour saw the peak of the Madonna wannabe phenomenon, with lots of female attendees dressing like her. While still on the tour, Penthouse and Playboy magazines published nude photos of her, taken in New York in 1978. The publication of the photos caused a media uproar, but Madonna remained unapologetic and defiant, telling the crowd at the 1985 Live Aid concert that she wouldn’t “take shit off today, as the media might hold it against me ten years from now”. A month or so before Live Aid, Madonna played three nights at Universal City in L.A., of which the final night - 28th April ’85 - was recorded for FM broadcast around California, and synced across America and many other parts of the world. This CD release contains the entire performance she gave that night, a fine example of Madonna live at the point in her career when she was on the brink of world domination.

Madonna's Ciao Italia: Live From Italy captures a performance from her 1988 world tour and features hits like "Lucky Star," "True Blue," "La Isla Bonita," "Like a Virgin," and "Material Girl." A much simpler, less choreographed performance than her later extravaganzas like The Girlie Show, Ciao Italia is still entertaining in its own right, and will definitely please fans nostalgic for some old-school Madonna hits.
