Label: Bear Family | Rel: 1988

All of Sleepy LaBeef's most important records from his early singles for Starday to his latter-day sides for Sun are included on the mammoth, six-disc box set Larger Than Life. LaBeef recorded for a number of different labels during his career, and during that time, he explored a variety of roots music, from rockabilly and country to blues and soul. Spanning three full decades, Larger Than Life contains 158 tracks, including all of his recordings for Starday, Dixie, Columbia, and Sun. The box begins in the '50s and ends in the '70s, hitting all of LaBeef's best moments in the interim. A set of this size is designed for hardcore fans, and they are the ones who will treasure it for less-dedicated listeners, the music may become rather monotonous, since the sheer length of the box is overwhelming. However, Larger Than Life is a treasure for devoted followers, since it collects many rare items LaBeef's records have never been very easy to track down adding an excellent booklet and many demos and outtakes in the measure. For those fans, it's a necessary addition to their collection.

A complete 4CD boxset from the source of the 1963 radio series "Pop Goes The Beatles"
From January 1963, The Beatles regularly pulled in U.K. audiences of around ten million on "Saturday Club" and a myriad of other BBC pop shows, until they received the ultimate recognition from the B.B.C. when they were offered their own show, "Pop Go The Beatles". For some groups, a series that demanded five new recordings each week might have been daunting, but it allowed The Beatles to air their influences, and try out some new favourites. Pop Go The Beatles was broadcast in the summer of 1963 and this 4 CD set contains all sixteen episodes. The show features the band taking requests, interacting with presenters Lee Peters (first four episodes) and Rodney Burke (all the other episodes), playing their favourite songs and most importantly, performing live. Whilst most of the Beatles performances here appear on the more extensive BBC collections, it’s a treat to hear these shows in their entirety (except they're not !). The Beatles hadn’t been to America yet and were still Britain’s best kept secret. The innocence of 1963 comes through in these recordings…you can tell they were still just having fun playing together. An added bonus is the exhaustive 20 page booklet of sleeve notes, so detailed that it even transcribes all the between-song banter!

A characteristically humongous (8-CD) box set from the wonderful obsessive-compulsives at Bear Family, documenting the Killer's '60s tenure at Smash Records. Lewis made consistently good music during this period, but the combination of his personal scandals and the British Invasion made him a pariah to radio programmers until mid-decade, when he returned to his country roots. Highlights of the set include the entirety of a Texas live show, with Lewis and his crack band rendering various early rock standards at dangerously high (i.e., proto punk) speed, some excellent duets with his (then) wife Linda Gail, and gorgeous renditions of standards like Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" and Merle Haggard's "Lonesome Fugitive." Lewis fans with deep pockets should grab this one immediately…

When Jerry Lee Lewis was recording for Sun records it was his most prolific period in my opinion and this great box set containing 128 of his best recordings is simply stunning. One of the best box sets out there. Each of the four discs contains plenty of vintage rock 'n' roll as well as a few country songs, an even some gospel and rhythm & blues ditties thrown in for good measure. Of course, all of the big hits are included, as well as some rare gems that will have you coming back for more. Also remarkable is the attention to detail in the beautiful booklet, which includes several terrific photos and a very informative biography. Also there's a very insightful commentary, complete with recording dates of every song in the collection.

Blues / Rock'n'Roll / Memphis Blues

Gigantic eight record box, this comes the closest to documenting the wide breadth of blues recordings done by Sam Phillips at the Sun studios in Memphis during the early 50s. A landmark achievement.
This multi-disc set has most of the major blues classics of the late 1940's and 1950's that went on to spawn the rock era; from Ike Turner and Rocket 88 to Howlin' Wolf's best sides. Sam Phillips and Sun Records got every major player south of Chicago to record there sooner or later–and even some who had done work in Chicago came back to do work in the landmark Memphis studio (which is a GREAT tourist destination!).
