The Singles is a 2CD compilation highlighting the heap of recording Herman Blount recorded and released solely on the 45 rpm format, even though he was pressing up full length albums on a regular basis. Some of these singles were released in quantities as low as 50 so if you were not in the record store room when someone came in to sell it, you didn't know about it until much later. A few of these are recordings from him incognito while others are Sun Ra in the spectral flesh. This was released on the Evidence label.

The Pete McGuinness Jazz Orchestra - Strength In Numbers (2014)

The Pete McGuinness Jazz Orchestra - Strength In Numbers (2014)
MP3 320 kbps CBR | 77:21 min | 177 MB
Genre: Jazz, Big Band | Label: Summit Records

For the second album as leader of his jazz orchestra, New York-based Pete McGuinness says he has "returned to [his] roots," fashioning a series of dapper themes that embody his forward-looking point of view while swinging in the grand tradition of such legendary ensembles as Basie, Herman, Thad Jones and others. When someone like Bill Holman says (as he does) "wonderful writing," the tendency is to sit up and take notice. One keynote that's immediately clear is that Holman is, as usual, spot on, and that McGuinness ranks high among the jazz world's most skillful contemporary composer / arrangers, one who doubles on trombone and trebles as band singer (more about that anon).

MP3 320 kbps CBR | 62:28 min | 145 MB
Genre: Jazz | Label: Criss Cross Jazz

Following up his chord-less quartet outing of 2013 Overlooking Moments(CRC 1354), trumpeter Alex Sipiagin returns with a compelling sextet lineup featuring David Binney, Adam Rogers, John Escreet and Matt Brewer, every one of them an esteemed bandleader in the Criss Cross fold. Eric Harland, leader of his own Voyager group and a valued presence on 10 prior Criss Cross releases (including two by Sipiagin), rounds out the ensemble on drums. The dense yet flowing counterpoint, knotty lyricism and effortless groove anchoring these original pieces make Balance 38 -58 a vital addition to Sipiagin's catalog.

Sanchez's experience composing the Birdman score was heavily influential on the cinematic scope of The Meridian Suite, his fifth album as leader on Italian label CAM JAZZ. "The movie is basically one long continuous shot", he explains, referring to the film's illusion of being shot in a single take as it follows Michael Keaton through his Broadway breakdown. "That's also what I wanted to do with this suite; to the listener it should be seamless". The suite takes full advantage of the versatility and wide-ranging palette of Migration, the quartet that Sanchez has led since 2011. Tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake doubles on Electric Wind Instrument (EWI), John Escreet on piano and Fender Rhodes, and Matt Brewer on both acoustic and electric bass. Sanchez also layered keyboard atmospherics onto the album in post-production along with a wide array of guitars from Adam Rogers, while singer Thana Alexa contributes soaring lyrics to the second movement, "Imaginary Lines", and coloristic wordless vocals elsewhere.
