Verglichen mit Schuberts Winterreise ist Schumanns Liederzyklus Frauenliebe und -leben kurz. Und dennoch umfasst er – so will es der Titel, so ist sein Inhalt – ein ganzes Leben: das Leben einer Frau, wie das 19. Jahrhundert es sah. Es galt als abgeschlossen, wenn sie das Unglück hatte, früh Witwe zu werden.Schumanns Zyklus endet mit dem Tod des Ehemanns, ein Verlust, der gewöhnlich das Verschwinden der Ehegattin aus der Gesellschaft bedeutete. Ihr Leben danach war nicht der Rede wert: Kindererziehung und einsame Abende, Kirchgang und Trauerkleidung, sofern sich nicht ein bedürftiger Witwer fand, der eine Stiefmutter für seine Kinder benötigte…

Schumann’s Frauenliebe und -leben is a short song cycle in comparison to Schubert’s Winterreise. Nevertheless, it covers – as title and substance suggest – an entire life: the life of a woman as perceived in the 19th century. A life that was deemed to have ended through the catastrophic event of becoming a young widow.

This edited volume on contextualism and pragmatics is interdisciplinary in character and contains contributions from linguistics, cognitive science and socio-pragmatics. Going beyond conventional contextual matters of truth-conditions and pragmatic intrusion, this text deals with a variety of issues including hyperbole, synonymy, reference, argumentation, schizophrenia, rationality, morality, silence and clinical pragmatics. Contributions also address the semantics/pragmatics debate and show to what extent the theory of contextualism can be applied. This volume is based on a unitary research project financed by the University of Messina and appeals to students and researchers working in linguistics and the philosophy of language.
