The story of an individual who is born and raised on a ship, learning about people and the outside world through interactions with the ship's rotating passengers, THE LEGEND OF 1900 comes from director Guiseppe Tornatore. When a deckhand, Boodman (Bill Nunn), discovers a newborn baby on January 1, 1900, he Christens him Danny Boodman T.D. Lemon 1900. A freak accident takes the life of the older Boodman, and 1900 (Tim Roth) is looked after by other members of the ship's crew. As he grows up, he learns to accept the crew as his family and the ship as his home. A glimpse of an individual playing a piano intrigues 1900, and before long he's a well-accomplished adult pianist. The legend reaches land and eventually earns 1900 visits from Jelly Roll Morton (Clarence Williams III) and a member of the music industry who wants to record him. The song that 1900 plays is dedicated to a beautiful young woman (Melanie Thierry) who threatens to lure him off the ship. Sheepishly, he stays. All of this is told in flashback, remembered by 1900's despondent friend Max (Pruitt Taylor Vince) as he prepares to pawn his trumpet. When he discovers that the ship is about to be sunk, he is convinced that 1900 is still on it somewhere and the frantic race is on to save his friend.

À l'aube du XXe siècle, dans une salle de banquet vide, Danny, l'un des machinistes du paquebot "Virginian", découvre un bébé abandonné. Il l'adopte et l'élève comme son propre fils. Ne sachant pas comment l'appeler, il le baptise "1900". 1900 grandit sur le paquebot, vit sur le paquebot, ne quitte jamais son paquebot. Huit ans plus tard, Danny, recevant un crochet du bateau derrière la tête, meurt. 1900 devra grandir seul. Un soir, en se promenant sur le bateau, il voit un piano. Il s'assied sur le tabouret et joue. Curieusement, il révèle un don pour le piano. Les années passent sans que 1900 ne pose jamais pied à terre. Puis vient Max Tooney (nommé Tim Tooney dans le livre), qui deviendra son ami. Ils ne se séparent plus, liés comme les deux doigts de la main. 1900 est mondialement réputé comme étant un virtuose, capable de fasciner par sa musique. Il joue pour qui veut l'entendre : en première comme en troisième classe. Des producteurs tentent de l'enregistrer et de le faire partir en tournée dans le monde entier, mais 1900 refuse de quitter son navire. Sa réputation continue pourtant de grandir. Jelly Roll Morton, qui se dit être l'inventeur du jazz, le provoque en duel. Jelly perdra. Quand Max arrive au bout de son contrat, il quitte le navire et 1900. Mais quand il apprend, quelques années plus tard, que le Virginian est condamné à être dynamité, Max partira à la recherche de son ami.

Trois quadragénaires - Max, Raoul et Vincent - profitent du week-end du 15 août pour rejoindre leur petite famille à La Baule, dans la maison qu'ils ont louée conjointement . A leur arrivée, ils ont la surprise de trouver, confortablement installée dans le salon, l'une de leurs voisines, venue garder les enfants de Max et Vincent. Celle-ci leur remet alors une lettre dans laquelle leurs femmes expliquent leur lassitude de jouer les mères dévouées. Décidées à s'octroyer du bon temps, elles sont donc parties en vacances de leur côté. Ce contretemps ne manque pas d'irriter Max, qui avait justement prévu d'annoncer à son épouse qu'il la quittait pour aller vivre avec sa maîtresse…
