Tel un illusionniste échappé d’une nouvelle de Jorge Luis Borges, Daniel Melingo revient ici avec sa voix, sa clarinette et son théâtre. Écouter cet Anda, c’est comme savourer un film de Fellini les yeux fermés, s’immerger dans un cabaret sonore conçu comme une suite de tableaux baroques et fous. Avec cette cuvée 2016 de Melingo, le tango des origines s’y régénère, un peu comme si le grand Carlos Gardel était au centre d’une fiction rock’n’roll, avec une galerie de personnages où Satie et Gainsbourg sont quelques-uns des fantômes convoqués par l’acteur - poète argentin… Difficile de ne pas tomber sous le charme de cette exubérance poétique qui ne ressemble à aucune autre.

Like an illusionist straight out of a Borges novella, Melingo is back, with his voice, his clarinet and his sense of drama. Listening to Anda is like enjoying a Fellini film with your eyes closed, losing yourself in a display of sound designed as a suite of baroque scenes in which each piece pulsates and destabilises us. In it, the original tango is reborn, a little as if Carlos Gardel was at the centre of a form of arty neo-rock fiction, with a gallery of characters featuring Erik Satie and Serge Gainsbourg among the spectres the Argentinian actor and poet conjures forth.

Prolific saxophonist, composer, and arranger David Murray has made a number of tribute recordings during his career to jazz luminaries such as Albert Ayler and Don Pullen, among others. Nat King Cole may seem an unlikely choice initially, and it might never have happened if Murray had not been recording at Cuba's Studio Egrem and saw a photograph of Cole with Armando Romeu from a pre-revolution session. Cole recorded a pair of Latin-inspired records, Cole Español and More Cole Español, in 1958 and 1962 respectively - one in Spanish and one in Portuguese (the singer spoke neither but learned standards and folk songs phonetically). The audiences these albums were directed at were already Cole fans, and while they weren't very good, they thought them amusing and flattering. Murray draws from these records here…
