Andrea Rost gained recognition in the 1990s as one of the world's leading new lyric sopranos. Her family was not especially musical, but, she says, she was always singing. She copied what she heard on the radio and joined the school chorus. She was 16 when she first attended the opera, at the Budapest Opera House. The fare was Donizetti's Don Pasquale. She was entranced by the blend of music, story, and dramatic staging and said, "Oh my God, I have to do this." She studied voice, then entered the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. Her teacher was Professor Zsolt Bende.

It has been so easy over the last century-and-a-half-plus to severely underestimate the creativity of Robert Schumann as a composer because he was so often thought of as a miniaturist, and because he was often plagued by self-doubts and, much more tragically, severe mental illness that caused him to end his life in 1856 at the age of 46, leaving behind a grieving widow in his wife Clara. This was, after all, a composer who wrote four very solid symphonies, a hugely popular piano concerto, an equally popular cello concerto, and various other orchestral works. Schumann also wrote choral works, notably a very inspired C Minor setting of the Latin Mass.

The chamber cantata flourished in Italy as a counterpart to public opera and oratorio, cultivated by aristocratic patrons for their personal enjoyment. Perhaps because of its essentially private origins, this pervasive Baroque form remains little known today. During his years in Italy (1706-1710), George Frideric Handel composed nearly 100 cantatas for a series of important patrons, but they have tended to be passed over in favor of his larger operas, oratorios, concertos and orchestral suites. The plan of La Risonanza to perform and record all of the cantatas with instrumental accompaniment (about one-third of the total) is therefore of signal importance for all music lovers, as it will bring this extraordinarily beautiful music once again to life (2006-2009).
