When he's not turning somersaults, doing backward flips, and standing on his head – all while playing, of course – Guitar Shorty is prone to cutting loose with savagely slashing licks on his instrument. Live, he's simply amazing – and after some lean years, his latter-day albums for Black Top, Evidence, and Alligator have proven that all that energy translates vividly onto tape. Collection includes: I Go Wild! (2001); Watch Your Back (2004); We The People (2006); Bare Knuckle (2010).

In many ways a bridge between the late-'50s generation of folksingers like Dave Van Ronk and the early-'60s version posed by innovative songwriters like Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton managed to keep his integrity intact through it all, and if he didn’t exactly break new ground anywhere, he has always been a careful and thoughtful songwriter. This set brings together five of the six LPs Paxton recorded and released with Elektra Records between 1964 and 1972 (the sixth, New Songs Old Friends, released in 1972, was a retrospective live set), 1964’s Ramblin’ Boy, 1966’s Outward Bound, 1968’s Morning Again, 1969’s The Things I Notice Now, and 1970’s Tom Paxton 6. The end result is an almost complete collection from Paxton's peak middle years, the years when he wrote and recorded most of the songs on which his legacy rests.

Bruce Springsteen once said he intended to make an album with words like Bob Dylan that sounded like Phil Spector where he sang like Roy Orbison, a nifty summary of many, but not all, of his artistic ambitions and a key to his appeal. Unlike any of the other singer/songwriters saddled with the appellation of "the new Dylan" in the early '70s, Springsteen never hid how he was raised on '60s AM radio. He loved rock & roll, whether it was the initial blast from the '50s or the mini-symphonies from the days before the Beatles or the garage rockers that surfaced in the wake of the British Invasion, and all this could be heard within his wild, wooly collective the E Street Band, a group who debuted on his second album, 1973's The Wild The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle, and who would support him through most of his career.

If you wish to judge a man by the company he keeps, then look no further than the Hall of Fame that is the listing above, a roll call of the good and the great musicians that enrich Fame's music. If the The Whole World's Shaking collection of Columbia recordings captured Fame the young R&B Mod God, then Survival signposts the later material which found Fame calling on a classic line-up of Brit and American jazzers. The public profile may not have been so high, but the music has grown all the richer. Two of the six CDs here cover the years 1991 to 2015 and feature top bands, Brit (notably with Guy Barker) and US, in full flow. Likewise, Fame's voice, if not as elastic as before, finds him able to narrate a lyric as few can (check out what he does with Fran Landesman's lyrics to ‘Eros Hotel’). It also finds him as the carrier of the flame: where once he was a young tyro, now he is putting listeners in touch with Mose Allison, Ray Charles and Ben Sidran, keeping the heritage live with songs like ‘Mose Knows’ and ‘Flamingo All Nighter’. There's a wadge of unreleased material, with the most notable plums appearing on the fourth disc, a whole unreleased live at the Lyceum set featuring an incandescent Alan Skidmore. Throw in an intelligent interview with Paolo Hewitt and handsome packaging and your Fame collection should now be complete.
