The songs on this album were recorded between the years of 2002 and 2005 in Muncie, Indiana. At that time, I’d just met the Lord in a radical way, and had dropped out of art school to live in a church intern house with 14 other guys. We lived a sort of loose monastic existence including prayer, scripture study, and roasting coffee in the church where we interned as unpaid staff. At night we gathered together for meals and took turns sharing the one room in the house that was set aside to be a place of solitude and creativity.

Blithely flinging aside the Victorian manners that kept her disapproving mother corseted, the New Woman of the 1920s puffed cigarettes, snuck gin, hiked her hemlines, danced the Charleston, and necked in roadsters. More important, she earned her own keep, controlled her own destiny, and secured liberties that modern women take for granted. Her newfound freedom heralded a radical change in American culture.

Garfield is a daily-syndicated comic strip created by Jim Davis. Published since June 19, 1978, it chronicles the life of the title character, the cat Garfield (named for Davis' grandfather); his owner, Jon Arbuckle; and the dog, Odie. As of 2007, it is syndicated in roughly 2,580 newspapers and journals and currently holds the Guinness World Record for being the world's most widely syndicated comic strip. Though never mentioned in print, Garfield is set in Muncie, Indiana, according to the television special Garfield Goes Hollywood. Common themes in the strip include Garfield's laziness, obsessive eating, and hate of Mondays and diets. The strip's focus is mostly on the interactions among Garfield, Jon, and Odie; recurring minor characters appear as well. Originally created with the intentions to "come up with a good, marketable character", Garfield has become commercially successful, with merchandise earning $750 million to $1 billion annually. In addition to the various merchandise and commercial tie-ins, the strip has spawned several animated television specials, two animated television series, two theatrical feature-length live-action films and three CGI animated direct-to-video movies. Part of the strip's broad appeal is due to its lack of social or political commentary; though this was Davis's original intention, he also admitted that his "grasp of politics isn't strong"

In the Sonoran Desert, Claude Lacombe (François Truffaut) and David Laughlin (Bob Balaban), along with other government scientific researchers discover a lost squadron of World War II aircraft. The aircraft are still intact and perfectly operational, but there is no sign of the pilot and its crew. At Air Traffic Control in Indianapolis, Indiana, two airline flights almost have a mid-air collision with a UFO. In Muncie, Indiana, three year-old Barry Guiler (Cary Guffey) is led out of his house when his toys start operating automatically, forcing his mother Gillian (Melinda Dillon) to chase after him. During a large-scale power outage, Indiana electrical lineman Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) experiences a close encounter of the second kind, and is soon caught in a motorized pursuit of four UFOs. He becomes obsessed with UFOs, much to the dismay of his wife, Veronica "Ronnie" Neary (Teri Garr).
