Audio production is an incredibly rewarding craft. To take the raw, basic tracks of a fledgling idea and shape them into one glorious stereophonic sound wave is an amazing feat. The transformation from analogue to digital dominance has brought many advances in sound quality and new techniques, but producing digital music with only a standard computer and DAW can be problematic, time-consuming and sometimes disappointing without the right approach and skills. In Template Mixing and Mastering, renowned mix engineer Billy Decker tackles the challenges of in-the-box production through his innovative template approach.

Stephen Hartke is widely recognised as one of the leading composers of his generation. His individual voice is marked by a sense for melody and colour that follows in the tradition of Bartók and Messiaen. This collection offers the listener different sides of Hartke’s chamber music performed by one of America’s premiere chamber ensembles, the Los Angeles Piano Quartet. The surreal trio The Horse with the Lavender Eye of 1997 and the four selections from Post-modern Homages for solo piano here receive their premiere recording. The Sonata is a vivid three-movement work for solo piano while The King of the Sun, written for the Los Angeles Piano Quartet, takes its inspiration from paintings by Miró.

This programme brings together aesthetic and musical elements of East and West. Zhou Long captures the essence of the Chinese plucked ch’in, and Cambodian aesthetics are preserved in Chinary Ung’s expressive Spiral III. Tan Dun’s Eight Colors combines the exotic timbres of Peking Opera with Second Viennese School tonalities. Gao Ping’s Bright Light and Cloud Shadows has been admired for its ‘long-breathed brush strokes’ (Washington Post). Taking its inspiration from James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, Toru Takemitsu’s beautifully crafted A Way a Lone evokes a shimmering sound world.
