The music on The Swingin's Mutual!, a dozen selections featuring the George Shearing Quintet, includes six that have vocals by a young Nancy Wilson. This was one of Wilson's most jazz-oriented dates (even if she was never a jazz singer) and is highlighted by her vocals on "The Nearness of You" and "The Things We Did Last Summer," along with instrumental versions of "Oh! Look at Me Now," "Blue Lou," and "Lullaby of Birdland."

Signed by Capitol in 1960, Nancy Wilson enjoyed her first hit with Guess Who I Saw Today, a single that would prove to be the first of several major hits for the singer. By 1962 Nancy was rightfully regarded as one of the best female singers around, mixing Dinah Washingtons jazz stylings with Sarah Vaughans jazz tone, a mix that proved irresistible on Nancys collaborative album with Cannonball Adderley. Later the same year Nancy released Hello Young Lovers, her fourth album for Capitol. With arrangements by George Shearing, the album continued her hot streak, hitting #49 on the Billboard chart and earning her a number of monikers, of which Fancy Miss Nancy would appear to be the most apt.

The Music for Lovers series from EMI and Blue Note spotlights the balladic nature and romantic side of artists who have recorded for its associated labels. Nancy Wilson may not get her due as a jazz vocalist, but as a romantic balladeer she has few peers, with a voice that communicates romance and sensuality. The 12 selections come from her best albums, including 1961's The Swingin's Mutual! (with the George Shearing Quintet), Yesterday's Love Songs/Today's Blues from 1963, and But Beautiful from 1969.

Teodorico Pedrini is the only 18th century composer of which we know that he wrote European music in China, where he arrived after an eight year long journey from Italy to the Canary Island, Chile, Mexico, Peru and the Philippines. After his arrival in Beijing in 1711, he worked for the emperors Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong until his death in 1746. Until today, he has been appreciated as one of the most important cultural ambassadors for Western music in Asia of all times.

Vocal Jazz, Soul, Pop | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 70 min | 161 MB
Label: Columbia | Rel: 1999

A "greatest hits" album, a concept pioneered by Columbia Records, is usually thought of as a compilation containing the single recordings by an artist that scored on the charts. In that sense, one might wonder what business Columbia had releasing a Nancy Wilson album called Greatest Hits since, in her 12-year tenure with the label, she had only placed four singles on the R&B charts, none of which reached the top half of the list. Those four recordings, "Love Won't Let Me Wait," "I Can't Make You Love Me," "Do You Still Dream About Me," and "Don't Ask My Neighbors," lead off the collection, and there is a previously unreleased "after hours mix" of "I Can't Make You Love Me" at the end. In between, there are two recordings that originally appeared on Capitol Records, Wilson's label from 1960 to 1980, one of which, "Save Your Love For Me" (accompanied by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet), was her initial R&B chart hit. The rest of the tracks are drawn from Wilson's Columbia albums of the 1980s and '90s, and they include: "Wish You Were Here," a duet with James Ingram; Stephen Sondheim's "Loving You," a duet with Peabo Bryson; "The Two Of Us," from the album of that title, which was co-billed to Ramsey Lewis; and "Forbidden Lover," a duet with Carl Anderson.
