Nightscape

Nightscape from the young Parisian guitarist Paul Abirached and the not-so-young, venerable pianist Alain Jean-Marie is the first album of a new series on Archie Shepp's Archieball label called the Rainbow Collection. These two musicians already worked together as part of a quartet on the recording of Paul Abirached's first album Dream Steps. This second work is one of great elegance. The album features five original compositions by Abirached and covers of works by Jim Hall, Paul Motian, Joe Lovano, Wayne Shorter and Billie Holiday.

Following the success of «Meeting Point» (2016), the Norwegian instrumentalists keep diving into their love of different styles. Although they still sort of fit the description «Progressive Rock meeting Fusion», the songs on «Nightscape» have a more traditional, song-based structure, taking inspiration from some of the great pop music of the 20th century. Also adding more cinematic textures to the songs gives this release another dimension.

Kat (Emily Galash), a guarded drifter, crosses paths with a phantom car responsible for a wave of violence. She has to learn to trust other people if they hope to survive the growing carnage.

Jon was born in New York City in 1938. His mother studied classical music and practiced as he went to sleep each night. He was also exposed to jazz at an early age through recordings around the house of various big and small bands. Jon heard Charlie Parker play on a JATP (Jazz at the Philharmonic) concert recording and decided that Alto was his instrument. That lasted until the final year at the special music High School he attended. The piano became central in his life around then and his passion for the jazz being played around the city was all consuming.

In a genre that's mostly instrumental, we are one of the few acts who chose to incorporate vocals and make retrowave SONGS. We put as much heart and soul in our lyrics as we do in our music, so in the next couple of weeks, we'd like to share our words here, so you may (re)discover them. Let's start with Red Alert and the dark romance behind it - a bad girl, a dangerous love affair…

Stephan Thelen is a composer, musician and mathematician based in Zürich, Switzerland. He is best known as composer, artistic director and guitarist of the Swiss minimal groove band SONAR and for his composition "Circular Lines", commisioned, played and recorded by the KRONOS QUARTET.
