Paule is pushing 50, as she repeatedly observes in her voice-over commentary. When she – a philosophy lecturer with a 10-year marriage and a 15-year-old daughter – learns that her husband is having an affair with a 28-year-old, this number takes on a special weight. The Internet site “L’âme-sœur” is supposed to help Paule get through her burgeoning midlife crisis. Although she doesn’t find any soulmates there, she does discover a great number of opportunities for personal rediscovery and sexual exploration.

One night, she finds it too hard to bear, and leaving home where the old woman is suffering, she begins to hang around in Paris.She will meet people, and from dusk to dawn, she will learn to leave her childhood behind and to grow into a woman. This is a simple but endearing story and the beautiful Johanna Shimkus is simply breath taking.

A philosopher and a culture critic who chose to work in the film medium, Jean-Luc Godard appeared on the international scene both as a writer for the Cahiers du Cinema as well as a leading representative of the French New Wave movement. His unconventional approach to everything from film structure to editing and sound, infuses his films with a playful iconoclasm and an idiosyncratic identity. His intellectual preoccupations are often centered around political themes (capitalism, democracy), sociology (the conventions, conformism and Faustian aspects of modernity), existentialism (human identity) etc. For over 45 years, Godard's metalinguistic experimentation with the elements of cinema, from jump-cuts to whispered voice-overs, has established him as one of the most persistently probing, thought-provoking and influential film-makers in history.

KONKURS is Milos Forman's debut film and launched what became known internationally as the Czech New Wave. Although made as two separate 'featurettes', the style and themes were very similar and they were released as one film. KONKURS is important as the first work of a world-renowned director because it clearly shows the beginnings of the style and pre-occupations prominent in many of Forman's subsequently acclaimed films including 'Loves of a Blonde', 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' and 'Amadeus'.
