Rock / Indie Rock / Post Punk

The Fall's New Facts Emerge opens with a track that sounds a bit like a mean-spirited parody of the Fall, as an incomprehensible Mark E. Smith spouts gibberish over some random noise hovering in the background. Then "Fol de Rol," the first proper song, kicks in, and as the band lays into a minimalistic but ferocious slab of garage-centric punk rock, Mark E. Smith…well, he spouts gibberish, or at least it's pretty hard to tell what he's on about most of the time. The difference is, this time Smith sounds fully energized and ready to tear a hole in your sound system with the tension and power of his vocals.

Our Brilliant Careers: Cherry Red Rarities 1981-1983 Review by Richie Unterberger
This assortment of 22 odds and ends released by the Cherry Red label in the early '80s contains, as the liners rightly note, "tracks not previously available on CD, or now deleted, or just pretty hard to find." But it's not solely of interest as a rarity compilation, for Cherry Red was one of the more idiosyncratic and high-quality indie rock labels of the early '80s, and this also functions as a good overview of the range of sounds the label explored at the time.

With a voice similar to Roy Harper and songs in the Folk Rock tradition of Nick Drake meets Simon & Garfunkel meets Al Stewart - it's a mystery as to why Marc Brierley's debut LP on the giant CBS Records did so little business in 1968? Maybe it was the concert-poster lettering of his name/title or Ron Hendersen's stunning oil painting on the cover that led people to believe it was some kind of "Odyssey & Oracle" Psych masterpiece when it was really a good old Folkie record? It sold zip and consequently it's booked at Ј400 in 2014 Price Guides - but often sells for much more on Auction sites. And on the strength of this fabulous Cherry Tree Expanded CD remaster (part of Cherry Red Records) - it's easy to see why collectors want it.

It goes without saying that 1968 doesn't have the same kind of cachet as 1967 - a year that, in musical terms, will always be indelibly associated with the Summer of Love, Sgt Pepper and the emergence of psychedelia. •But although the major players turned away from the excesses of the previous year in favour of a back-to-basics musical approach, there were arguably a greater number of psychedelic records made in 1968 than during the preceding twelve months. •Vital, lysergically-inclined 45s emerged from a whole host of younger groups, with The Factory, Mike Stuart Span, Fleur de Lys, The Fire, The Barrier, Boeing Duveen, Rupert's People and numerous others all releasing singles that have long been widely regarded by psychedelic collectors as genre classics.

In the late 1970s and 1980s, Jeremy Lewis established and ran Liverpool’s Inevitable Records, and in doing so provided what he calls an “incubator” for an impressive selection of the talent emerging from the city at that time. From PETE BURNS and DEAD OR ALIVE to CHINA CRISIS, WAH! HEAT and others, Inevitable provided the launchpad for many successful careers. Operating initially out of Lewis’ Amazon Studios, and mutating as the years passed from an outlet for the city’s spiky post-punk sounds to a synth-pop, commercially minded imprint with major label backing, Inevitable proved popular with JOHN PEEL and found admirers from across the ‘80s musical spectrum.
