Rare 1970 album produced by Johnny Otis featuring the stinging guitar of his son Shuggie – with two previously unissued bonus tracks Bluesman Slim Green made very few records in a career that started in 1948 and ended with this LP in 1970. Born Norman G. Green in Bryant, Texas in 1920, he grew up in Oklahoma and played guitar in Las Vegas before settling in Los Angeles in the late 1940s. He made his first records in 1948 for local labels. Listening to them suggests a player full of country influences, updating them for a modern urban audience. He reappeared a decade later in a group called the Cats From Fresno, who made two singles for Johnny Otis’ Dig label, a contact he renewed in the late 60s. Johnny Otis, a pioneer of post-war R&B, had scored hits as a producer and recording artist as well as being a renowned talent-spotter. Having dropped out of sight for much of the 1960s, he returned to the studio in the latter part of the decade and released a series of records for the Kent label, distinguished by the guitar playing of his teenage son Shuggie.

With a style that merged boogie-woogie neatly into the blues, Otis Spann found his first success as the pianist for Muddy Waters, and he played on virtually all of Waters' classic tracks between 1953 and 1969, but as the house pianist for Chicago's Chess Records, he also figured prominently on sides from Willie Dixon, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy, Sonny Boy Williamson, Little Walter, Junior Wells, Etta James, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and countless others. Spann was also a fine singer and leader in his own right, and on his own sides, as well. This wonderful two-disc set collects Spann's early solo outings for Chess from the '50s, as well as material from his 1960 sessions in New York with Robert Lockwood, Jr. and St. Louis Jimmy Oden, and rounds things into a complete portrait by including sides he did with B.B. King, James Cotton, Hubert Sumlin, and many others. Spann is regarded as Chicago's greatest post-war blues pianist. This set shows why.

The blues scene in Chicago has sadly deteriorated over the last 10 years or so. Most of the old, legendary musicians have died. Only a very few places still feature live music in the black neighbourhoods (the South- and Westside, where Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, and all the other greats had their home base). Many new blues clubs opened on the (white) Northside, but the music there is mostly aimed at the white tourist market. The same old songs played over and over again, no steady bands, personnel in the. bands always changing, definitely never any rehearsal. One of the few bands that have maintained a high musical standard, is The Big Four Blues Band. They were formed more than ten years ago, have not changed the personnel, became better and better over the years, and without trying to become rock stars they are still playing that old Chicago Blues…

This new compilation brings us the best of Hopkins' 1946-1948 recordings for the Los Angeles based Aladdin Record label. Remarkable solitary blues recorded in the fully-formed individual style on which he would build a life-long career. Hopkins scored national hits with "Shotgun Blues" and "Short Haired woman", essential, evocative Texas blues, rooted in a tradition going back to Blind Lemon Jefferson.

This lost gem was originally issued as a 12” LP in 1957 by the Aladdin subsidiary label Score, and long unavailable on any format. In addition to the original masterpiece, this remastered collector’s edition contains 15 bonus tracks, consisting of hard-to-find sides issued by different labels, such as Aladdin, Ace, and King Records during the Fifties and early Sixties. Highlights include two of Brown’s seasonal-themed blues songs; the celebrated “Merry Christmas Baby” and “Please Come Home for Christmas.” These sensational recordings constitute a treasure of incalculable value, which would form the basis of Charles Brown’s legend and secure his reputation as one of the greatest figures of piano blues.
