Studio Sysmo, Paris, February 17 & 18, 1988. This album was recorded barely three months before Chet Baker’s death (he died in mysterious circumstances, falling from his Amsterdam hotel room in May 1988, aged just 58) and was long thought to be his final recording session. In fact, Baker would record two more studio albums the following month. Even so, it documents one of his final recordings and provides a tantalising glimpse of unfulfilled future plans.

Margo Guryan Died in 2021. Her Music Keeps Getting Rediscovered. “Words and Music,” a new anthology, shines light on a little-known but increasingly beloved master of pop and jazz songwriting. In the late summer of 1970, Elton John arrived at Los Angeles International Airport for his debut U.S. shows and was greeted by another wildly talented piano-playing singer-songwriter: Margo Guryan. Her husband, David Rosner, worked for the company that signed John, and together they helped him get sorted in the run-up to his legendary performances at the Troubadour, kicking off a long, spectacular career. Guryan’s career proved less of a spectacle. After modest success as a jazz-pop songwriter, she recorded one album of her own, with Rosner’s encouragement. “Take a Picture” was alive with dazzling melodies, lyrical wit, strikingly intimate vocals and marvelously florid arrangements — a small masterpiece of the microgenre known as sunshine pop. But Guryan was a reluctant performer who refused to tour, and her album, released in 1968, was a commercial flop, after her label barely promoted it. And yet, in a unique twist on a familiar story, the 11 songs of “Take a Picture” became a shared secret around the world; pirate pressings overseas earned her the sobriquet “The Soft Pop Queen of Japan.” In 2000 the LP was officially reissued, followed by others collecting her demo recordings — lean performances that could pass for 21st-century indie-pop.

The piano trio in Jazz - it does not get more essential than this. On these ten CDs fifteen excellent alliances of piano, bass, and drums present prime examples of what has often been called Jazz' "chamber music". A perfect and poignant introduction to the genre, this collection of nineteen original albums also serves as a beautiful reminder of just how diverse this instrumental combination could be made to sound in the late 50s and early 60s. Just listen to the way a standard like Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love" is interpreted by Bill Evans with his trio of Scott La Faro on bass and Paul Motian on drums or by Barry Harris, who also played with Miles Davis back in his hometown of Detroit, when accompanied by Joe Benjamin and Elvin Jones. Or how differently "Caravan" sounds when played by Thelonious Monk on his tribute to Duke Ellington or by the eminent Kenny Drew. Take away the bio- and discographic details and all musicological mumbo jumbo and the music will speak for itself, always deeply touching and emotionally sublime, perfectly suited for a Sunday at the riverside - or any other weekday or location for that matter.

Featuring his trio of Aaron Diehl on piano and Harish Raghavan on bass, the album follows on the heels of his masterful release Continuing, which was voted #4 release of 2023 by the Francis Davis Poll of over 150 jazz critics, and was hailed by The Guardian as "5-Stars: simmering with reinventions of old magic… One of the year's special sets."

Éric Barret is a rare musician: in terms of talent, but also because of the parsimonious nature of his record productions. We will remember, for example, his participation in the first ONJ under the direction of François Jeanneau, an orchestra that he would return to a few years later for an ONJ Express led by Didier Levallet this time.
