The Ares Trio brings together two requiems in the form of piano trios by two composers whose active periods fell during those of the Soviet Union and who were harassed by the cultural bureaucracy there: Shostakovich composed his Trio for Piano and Strings op. 67 in memory of his beloved friend, the musician and music critic Iván Sollertìnski, who had always stood by him, even when the Leningrad composer's music was condemned by Stalin and he thus had to constantly fear arrest.

The trio was premiered in Leningrad in the same year, 1944, and has been part of the standard repertoire of piano trio literature ever since. Shostakovich's contemporary and fellow sufferer Arno Babadjanian, on the other hand, wrote his Piano Trio almost as a requiem for himself: in 1952, the 31-year-old was diagnosed with leukaemia, which in his day was an almost certain death sentence. But with an iron will to live, he managed over 30 more years, during which his trio was performed again and again.

This Mendelssohn's trios disc from the Hamlet Trio, a group just four years old, boasts performances that shine with confidence and immediacy. Good things abound: in the D minor, the second movement’s tempo is spot-on, and the piano’s opening soliloquy persuasively done, while the scherzo sizzles without losing sight of an underlying elegance. The opening Allegro energico of the C minor, too, is certainly not short on fire.

On ne peut pas dire qu’il y a pénurie d’enregistrement des Trios avec piano de Schubert, ni même du Notturno : la discographie peut s’enorgueillir de quelques-unes des plus somptueuses interprétations, que ce soit de solistes rassemblés pour l’occasion (Gendron et la fratrie Menuhin, Rose-Stern-Istomin, Cortot-Thibaud-Casals pour le Premier) ou d’ensembles constitués (Beaux Arts, Wanderer…) ;

Given the paucity of modern repertoire for piano trio, it is no surprise that Martinů’s four works for this combination have repeatedly received attention. There have, though, been relatively few complete surveys over the years, perhaps down to the equivocal attitude of performers, critics and audiences to a composer too often labelled unintelligently as a neo-classical note-spinner. As Martin≤ has begun to shake off this stigma and gain more gradual acceptance from the wider public, this newcomer is only the second cycle of two to be generally available (the Bekovas having excluded the Bergerettes of 1939), both of them set down in the past three years. Although its members are all based in the USA as individuals, the Arbor Trio originally came together in the Czech Republic; so, as repertoire, Martin≤ is home-away-from-home. Their accounts are well prepared and vivid, their choice of tempi consistently slower than all their rivals, except for the Bekovas in the slow movements. In their own terms, the Arbor Trio’s readings make sense – less wilful than the Chandos group and broadly of a piece with the Kinsky Trio. At times their view of allegro moderato, a tempo indication common to all three numbered trios, risks losing impulsion, and their rivals fairly generally have a stronger sense of pulse.

Haydn worked during a period that witnessed a great deal of stylistic change, including the evolution of keyboard instruments from the harpsichord to the pianoforte with its hammer action and greater dynamic flexibility. These rarely heard but influential early Piano Trios include music originally conceived for piano solo or baryton trio. The Trio in F minor is unusual for its elaborate ornamentation and darker key, and is highly attractive in its youthful freshness. The acclaimed Aquinas Piano Trio brings these unjustly neglected works vividly to life.

Following their critically acclaimed debut album (Mozart Piano Trios, RES10168), the Rautio Piano Trio returns to Resonus Classics with a recording of works for piano trio by Ludwig van Beethoven, Ferdinand Hiller & Franz Schubert. With a programme that includes the world premiere recording of Hiller’s Piano Trio No. 6 in C minor alongside Beethoven’s ‘Ghost’ Trio and Schubert’s Piano Trio in E-flat major ‘Notturno’, the Rautio Piano Trio presents three striking and individual works each notable for their use of a nocturne, evoking the quiet night-time and an atmosphere of poetic reflection.
