Essential: a masterpiece of progressive rock music

Animals is the tenth studio album by English rock band Pink Floyd, released on 21 January 1977 through Harvest and Columbia Records. It was recorded at the band's Britannia Row Studios in London throughout 1976, and was produced by the band. The album continues the longform compositions that made up their previous works, including Wish You Were Here (1975). The album received positive reviews from critics and was commercially successful, reaching number 2 and 3 in the UK and US, respectively. Since its release, it has sold over 5 million copies worldwide.
After over eight months of continuous recording at their own Britannia Row studios in 1976, ‘Animals’ was originally released in 1977 and became one of the band’s most popular albums. The album is amongst Pink Floyd’s most recognisable covers featuring the iconic pig flying above Battersea Power Station.
Following the release of the 1977 album Animals and its accompanying "In the Flesh" tour, Pink Floyd went on hiatus, having become popular enough to support solo albums by bandmembers who were inclined to make them. Guitarist David Gilmour and keyboard player Richard Wright were. For his album, Wright assembled some of the backing musicians who had been accompanying Pink Floyd for years, in particular reed player Mel Collins and guitarist Snowy White.
