Dr. Lonnie Smith brings an album with SHM-CD format. On Evolution, Dr. Lonnie Smith returns to the Blue Note Records label with a unique project that enhances his legacy as one of the premier masters of modern music. With three new Smith originals (“For Heaven’s Sake”, “African Suite” and “Talk About This”) and exciting new arrangements of tunes such as Monk’s “Straight No Chaser”, “Play It Back” and “Afrodesia,” The Good Doctor and his cast offer plenty of surprises and invention along with a serious groove.

Of the many wonderful blaxploitation soundtracks to emerge during the early '70s, Shaft certainly deserves mention as not only one of the most lasting but also one of the most successful. Isaac Hayes was undoubtedly one of the era's most accomplished soul artists, having helped elevate Stax to its esteemed status; therefore, his being chosen to score such a high-profile major-studio film shouldn't seem like a surprise. And with "Theme from Shaft," he delivered an anthem just as ambitious and revered as the film itself, a song that has only grown more treasured over the years, after having been an enormously popular hit at the time of its release. Besides this song, though, there aren't too many more radio-targeted moments here. "Soulsville" operates effectively as the sort of downtempo ballad Hayes was most known for, just as the almost 20-minute "Do Your Thing" showcased just how impressive the Bar-Kays had become, stretching the song to unseen limits with their inventive, funky jamming.

Bloom Ascension is a resplendent expression of elegant futurism. Whereas most great live rock albums are about energy, At Fillmore East is like a great live jazz session, where the pleasure comes from the musicians' interaction and playing. The great thing about that is, the original album that brought the Allmans so much acclaim is as notable for its clever studio editing as it is for its performances. Producer Tom Dowd skillfully trimmed some of the performances down to relatively concise running time (edits later restored on the double-disc set The Fillmore Concerts), at times condensing several performances into one track.

The record consists of awesome tracks, each one of them a lyrical short story, minimal poems in prose, presented in a lavish sonic guise, featuring the Scorpions' characteristic trademarks from the early 1980s, yet produced from a 2020s perspective. 'Rock Believer' is perhaps the group's most characteristic album to date - a recording by a band at the pinnacle of their musical art.
