Poverty China

This book explores the historical, cultural and philosophical contexts that have made anti-poverty the core of Chinese society since Liberation in 1949, and why poverty alleviation measures evolved from the simplistic aid of the 1950s to Xi Jinping’s precision poverty alleviation and its goal of eliminating absolute poverty by 2020.

This book aims to empirically and theoretically study how the economic growth and inequality affected China’s rural poverty since China’s reform and opening-up. Apart from the trickle-down effect, some empirical researches show that rising inequality usually links with unfairly shared of the economic growth, which is not good for the poor, and this book particularly concerns with the impact of inequality on poverty reduction. In 11 chapters, it leads readers to review the dynamic changes of rural poverty in China, and estimates rural poverty by various methods, for instance, with analysis by monetary poverty (including income and expenditure poverty), multidimensional poverty, absolute poverty, and relative poverty.

This book provides a systematic overview of China's achievements in eliminating absolute poverty by 2020 under current standards. The book is divided into three parts: The first part is a study of major policy practices with distinctive characteristics in China's poverty alleviation practices; the second part is a study of China's international cooperation in poverty alleviation; the third part is a study of China's poverty alleviation by international scholars from the perspective of international cooperation and international comparison. These reports pay attention to China's achievements and experiences in poverty alleviation and reflect on how to strengthen cooperation with China in poverty alleviation.

From both theoretical and practical perspectives, this book systematically expounds the important theories, key measures and major achievements in the field of poverty alleviation in China, and sums up the important experience of poverty alleviation, it answers the significant question why China has been able to lift itself out of poverty and build a moderately prosperous society in an all round way. China has accumulated experience for achieving the two centenary goals, and contributed Chinese wisdom and Chinese solutions to the global cause of poverty reduction.

This book aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of China’s Poverty Alleviation resettlement (PAR) particularly under the Link Policy, and further analysing the impacts of PAR on China’s rural transformation from multiple scales (regional and individual) and perspectives (social-economic development, urban-rural interactions and landscape changes), with a combination of multiple approaches including systematic literature review, content analysis, econometrical methods, spatial analysis, Cellular Automata modelling etc. Policy suggestions will also be provided to improve farmers’ sustainable livelihood and resilience coping with the changes of lifestyles due to the resettlement. This book contributes to inspiring and provoking thought among policymakers, researchers, and individuals worldwide grappling with the pressing issue of poverty and its eradication. Understanding the Chinese experience may yield valuable insights that can be adapted and applied in diverse contexts around the globe.
